Zuma had a blood sugar test today 2 hours ago and her finger is still bleeding. I had asked the doctor before what to do if it doesn't stop but she said it would. So how long is normal? And we've had it wrapped for most of the time and have been holding pressure.

How long has it been bleeding? Has it bled through a bandage?

2 hours. And yes, several bandage changes.

@anonysquire: has she had trouble with bleeding previously? I would call the on call line for the doctor. That's not normal for just a finger stick.

@MrsRcCar: she's only bled once and yes she bled for a while and it was a tiny cut. When do babies usually get blood tests?

That's not normal. When lo had itp and we had to do blood sticks for draws, the longest it bled was 10-15 minutes. She was also moving around so that contributed to it.

@anonysquire: I agree that seems excessive. Definitely call your nurse's/doctor's after-hours line!

@anonysquire: Hmmm... That's bizarre. I guess keep holding pressure. But if it really won't stop, she needs a platelet count and probably measurement of her clotting factors!

@anonysquire: I would take her to the hospital if it hasn't stopped yet. Honestly it isn't normal. I have clotting problems and have most of my life, the doctors at the hospital would do the testing.

I have ITP, a clotting disorder, and I would recommend that you take her to the ER if your doctor's office isn't taking you seriously. Two hours and several bandage changes from a finger stick is not normal. I certainly don't think she's in immediate, serious danger, but they need to check her platelet count.
ETA - does she bruise easily or have little pinprick marks anywhere on her body? I could only guess acute ITP or Von Willebrand, but those are the only two I'm familiar with.

@anonysquire: Her platelets may just be too low. I have trouble with clotting in combination with iron issues. Both my boys bruise very easy so we watch their bleeding extremely closely. The doctor always has impressed on us that if they bleed thru more then 2 bandages in like an hour that they need to go the hospital. The worst thing that will happen at the hospital is they will tell you she is fine.

@anonysquire: I can't really tell from the photo, but it doesn't look like petechia - those are tiny dots, red or dark purple, and there are typically a lot of them. That was my first symptom of ITP.
I hope you can get some answers! J had low platelets at birth and for the first few weeks because of my antibodies, but they weren't low enough to cause real concern or symptoms. But it's no fun to worry about blood clotting - I hope it turns out to be nothing!

@anonysquire: sounds like a clotting issue as mentioned above. I would tell her pediatrician, but no need to go to an emergency room. Just needs to be checked for a clotting disorder or platelet issue at her pedi office.
