Can someone explain to me why pjs need to be tight fitting to be more fire safe? Why pjs specifically and not other clothes?
What about flame-retardant chemicals? Are they safe??

My understating is that they are tight fitting for all those times your LO dances around an open flame before bed. Seriously... It doesn't make sense at all!
As to if the chemicals in fire retardant are safe... Technically they are approved as safe. But I think it's a personal choice. I am choosing to avoid any clothes that have been sprayed with or soaked in chemicals. I would rather avoid open flame and make sure my smoke detectors have batteries.
Eta: my avoidance is not so much because I think the chemicals absorb into LOs skin. But he chews and sucks on everything plus enhales any off gassing. In general we try to keep chemicals out of the house.

@sarah.clarisse: lol! yeah, we are currently using the tight fitting 100% cotton ones.
If LOs need to wear tight pjs to bed, why don't adults. I reaaally don't get it!

We have a lot of problems with this as DD's overnight cloth diapers are super-bulky and I prefer cotton PJs for her. I think we may start mixing and matching 2 piece PJs in order to get something that fits decently.

Not sure how reliable this is, but the Q&A on Ebay about children PJs says:
Q: What makes snug-fitting clothing safe from fire?
A: Snug-fitting fabrics are considered low-risk because they are too tight against the skin to provide enough oxygen to feed a flame.
