How exciting! We flew with E as a lap infant when she was 22 months old from Brisbane to Chicago via Sydney and LA, and we had three month old C as a lap infant as well! It was actually not that bad... We were fortunate in that there were some empty seats on our flight so we ended up in a row of four (A380) to ourselves. But honestly, E was always on one of our laps or standing on the floor next to us, using the empty seat as a convenient table for her toys. If you don't have an empty seat though, I'd recommend an aisle seat if you can get it so you have easy access for her to go for a little walk.

Other than that, lots and lots of snacks! We also went to the dollar store and bought loads of completely useless, stupid crap that was highly entertaining for E (a little wind up duck, some random crazy squeezy light up things etc). We kept everything in a bag and whenever she started getting restless, we'd go into our magical bag and pull out something else. Books, stickers, crayons, magnetic dress up dolls, little puzzles, and paint with water (carefully) were all great to use on the flight. And of course, the iPad - we downloaded loads and loads and loads of toddler apps before we went and those also came in handy!

Yes to everything @Ree723: said. Sticker books are also a hit with my LOs. Another thing is to bring extra water -- what I do is bring my LO's straw cup empty through security and then either fill it at the water fountain or buy a bottle of water to fill it. Planes are so dry and I feel like flight attendants don't offer enough to drink throughout the flight.

When we fly with our LOs, the rules are very lax, they can eat as much as they want, have lots of screen time, play with whatever they want, etc. Also, be prepared to do a lot of the entertaining if she doesn't sleep. I long for the days of sitting on an airplane and having "me" time to read, listen to music, watch films or nap!

I'm flying for the first time with my 23 month old as a lap baby. For take-off, someone suggested Rice Krispie treats and fruit snacks, since they're very chewy, similar to an adult chewing gum. My LO very rarely gets either, so I'm hoping the novelty of it, combined with it being chewy will help!

I'm also taking the iPad and goldfish!

@jaguar: the other ladies have given you some great advice. With our LO we always try to get a window seat (so we love planes we're seating is 2-4-2) because watching all the things going on outside while waiting on ground is the best entertainment for him. If you're flying with a "big" plane you might want to check with your airline whether it's possible to reserve a bassinet. Those are convenient when you fly around nap or night time. But even if not it'll insure you a seat in the infant row which usually has additional leg room.
