We have DD1's first cleaning today, she's been to the dentist for fluoride treatment/checks but today is the first time they will actually be cleaning. I'm terrified, I've made it sound really cool but she's not buying into it. I just pray we don't have a complete meltdown! Please share your stories and tell me it will go smoothly

We go to a pediatric dentist. They tried to do a cleaning at 3 years old but DS wasn't going to lay down in the chair and they didn't want to traumatize him so we rescheduled for 3.5. That 6 months made all the difference and it went amazingly well. The hygienist showed him exactly what she would be doing, and even let him hold some of the instruments and "help". It was also super fast. I think 15 minutes for the actual cleaning? Good luck!

We have our first cleaning on Monday. DD is 2.5 and did great at her first appt when they just looked at her teeth and keeps saying "I'm SO excited to go to the dentist!" Weirdo.
We have the Usborne book "Going to the Dentist" and she really likes it, and I like that it walks through what they will do. That said- we'll see how it goes on Monday...

we did it at 3yo, she did alright.. she at least sat through it but she kept clamping her mouth shut though towards the end and getting antsy tho. i hope she doesn't remember it as a bad experience

It went well for my son recently at not quite 3.5. To prepare, we read him several books about going to the dentist. The best one (despite its really dated pictures) is the Mr. Rogers Going to the Dentist book. Even though it was published in the 80s, pretty much everything happened as described in the book. We also took him to a pediatric dentist, so he was impressed with the toys in the waiting room and the prize he got at the end.
The little guy next to us, who looked just a bit younger, was totally freaking out. From what I gathered, his dad had surprised him with the visit so he wouldn't spend time fretting over it. That plan didn't seem to work for that kiddo.
