Does the hospital help you get your baby secured in a carseat before you leave? We just got ours and I'm freaking out that we'll have to worry about adjusting it around a brand new baby!

I usually give parents a hand, but make them actually do everything themselves. Legally though, it is a huge liability for nurses to secure the baby in the car seat themselves. Also - keep in mind all car seats are so different, we might not know the finer points of every kind, so it is best to familiarize yourself with how the seat works, and practice putting teddy bears or something into it.
ETA: Also, please make sure the shoulder straps are adjusted to the lowest setting before you get to the hospital, it is a pain in the butt to adjust them, and you will be so anxious to get out of there that it will just frustrate you to do it there!

@MsMini: I pulled out my Cabbage Patch doll. I think she's bigger than an infant.

@mediagirl: I am sure you will feel silly, but the parents who (sheepishly) admit practicing have a big leg up when it comes to securing the baby! The nurse should have no issue making sure you have the adjustment correct, just for your peace of mind though! I have even heard of people who strap their cats into the car seat (my cat would murder me in my sleep if I pulled that).

@MsMini: Great tips! I would have never thought to practice with a stuffed doll.

Everyone at the hospital is always so nice and helpful. I'm sure they'll help if you ask! They helped us without us having to ask.

We had to put our Lo in ourselves! No one helped

@MsMini: thank you for the tips. The lowest setting is so tiny, I can't believe a baby can be that small! (can you tell we have never been around newborns and this is our first?)

They watched but were not allowed to help. They checked it, made us adjust several things and rechecked. Never did they really touch it though. Way too much of a liability.

I don't remember it being hard? But who knows, feels like a lifetime ago now!

We had our fire department install it and show us how to use it. It was very helpful since the nurses weren't allowed to help technically.
