Which would you prefer? I am debating a new job and it would be a regular Monday through Friday job without calls after hours (plenty of PTO) or I currently have a very flexible job and get paid just for the hours I work but I have to always have my phone on me and like last friday I received several calls in the few hours I took my kid to chuck-e-cheese.

I prefer flexibility. I don't mind answering work calls outside of normal hours. BUT if I was truly "on call" where I might have to go into the office unexpectedly.... then I wouldn't like that.

Flexible...but it also depends on what your child care situation is like, and if there's someone to watch lo if/when you suddenly/unexpectedly need to work. My schedule is largely of my own choosing, which I'm grateful for, but sometimes it's frustrating when people expect answers immediately when I don't have child care (lo only goes part-time)

I picked strict schedule b/c I really just need the separation so I can focus 100% when I'm at work, and 100% on my family when I'm not at work.

Flexible...
It's what my work is now, and it's the best for our work/life balance! I rarely get calls outside of "normal" business hours anyway and I mostly benefit from a flex schedule!

Is money a concern at all? I'd be worried that if you're just getting paid for the hours you work in the flexible job, you're not really guaranteed to get a set amount each week. Even if weeks seem fairly even now, I'd have reservations that it could change in the future and all of a sudden I'd be making less money than I expected.

I voted strict, but I'll be honest, the reason is because I can not do my job if I am not at my desk. I can answer questions, but a lot of it involves computer work.

@MrsSCB: money is not a deciding factor. strict is more money because of the position and because I'd actually be working a 40 hour week, currently I work 30 because I don't have childcare on Fridays and adding childcare on Fridays means going from part time to full time and I'm working for like $20
@nana87: @mrsjyw: I'm off on Fridays and find myself on the phone quite a bit with one kid it was fine with 2 it's more difficult especially if I need to go dig out plans or specs. So while I don't typically get calls on the weekends Friday's are annoying. I'm thinking I'd prefer m-f but idk
@looch: yeah I bring home my plans and specs and can typically answer questions but it still turns a minute distraction into 15-20 by the time I get things out and opened up

If the strict hours comes with plenty of PTO, that's all the flexibility I would need. I'd rather leave work at the end of the day and not have to think about it at all and have my weekends all to myself, than have to deal with costumers (or whoever) interrupting my family dinners or other events!

In your situation, I'd prefer M-F. I'm usually all about flex, but I like to be able to turn off my phone/tech and not worry about answering to anyone.

@birdofafeather: this is the way I'm leaning at first I was really concerned and then I got several work phone calls in the 2 hours I spent taking my kids to chuck e cheese last weekend.

@jetsa: I mean, to me, that isn't flexible. You're being called on to work during family time!

I don't really see it as flexible if you're working over weekends/evenings on your "free" time! I like to leave work at work.

Strict schedule because what's the point of having flexibility if you could lose that time at a moments notice. Also, I'm too much of a hard worker, that I'd always be checking my phone.

@birdofafeather: @blackbird: my sentiments exactly. Your current situation doesn't sound so flexible, and you're getting paid for 30 hours but it sounds like you're really working more than that! I would go for the predictable 9-5 position.

@Pancakes: @blackbird: @birdofafeather: it's flexible because I can leave at a moments notice and take "off" for a sick kid etc. I may have to answer questions and such on my phone or email but I don't have to go in.
