Somehow the year escaped me with LO starting kindergarten and I missed the roll out of this year's flu shot. I made LOs appointment yesterday but it is a week away. I can do walk in. . Don't usually wait this long and we are going on a trip. According to the flu shot site, kids are not supposed to get sick after the shot so that must be just in my head that it happens.. Did you/LO get the flu shot yet this year? Do you ever have cold symptoms afterward?

LO was completely fine after his flu shot. His arm was a bit sore the next day but that it is.

My 3 year old got hers last week. No issues whatsoever.

Both my kiddos were totally fine after the shot. They received theirs in the thigh.

Both of my kiddos got theirs already. DS claimed his thigh was a lil sore afterwards, but was fine otherwise. He did catch a slight cold with a double ear infection this past week though. Apart from a lingering fever between 101-103 for 5 days that suppressed his appetite, he acted normal.

me and my one year old got them, no sickness. That is supposedly a myth btw.

DD only had loss of appetite and I doubt that was even from the shot.

My 4 year old, 7 month old, and DH and I have all gotten our flu shots. No one got even a sniffle afterwards.

My understanding is that the shot alone doesn't cause illness, but if you happen to be sick when you get the shot, the symptoms will be a bit more pronounced.

She got it on Thursday. Her arm was red at the shot spot and warm to the touch on Friday. It was gone by mid day Sat. But she was acting totally normal.

Call me crazy, but I love it when my DS gets vaccines because he sleeps like a rock that night. But I was sorely disappointed when he still had his usual MOTN wakeup after his flu shot. Didn't seem to make a difference to him.
I've never been sick after my flu shot, but I have a friend who was every time (partly psychosomatic for her as she got sick after any type of shot) and she stopped getting them because of that.

My lil guy got his last month and only had a sore thigh afterwards. My only advice would be; if your kiddo has a side preference with sleep, get the shot in the other leg.
First night post flu shot was a little disrupted and I suspect it was the sore leg that was making it hard for him to get comfortable on that side. -
I got mine this year and no symptoms whatsoever.
DS got his and he did get a runny nose a few days later, but he also started preschool that week. So I'm not convinced it was from the shot. -
My kids won't get theirs until mid-November because there are a few holidays and I have to do odd hours since my older LO is in school now. They've never had averse reactions in the past.

@looch: I think that's why they tell you not to get one if you're sick and not to have kids get one if they had a cold or fever.
I've gotten one every year without issue. My DH insists that he always gets sick after/because of it, but I think he's full of crap.

LO woke up with a stuffed nose and now she is sneezing. Our whole house has a lowered immune system this week so I am a bit worried about taking her next Monday like this. We have a monster trip planned shortly after so just considering delaying until after the trip. Will decide on Sunday.
Yah DH buys into the sick afterward myth too.

I never know how the kids will react, sometimes it's like the doctor gave them the elixir of life, and sometimes they feel a little under the weather after. No colds though. I do know a few adults that tend to get sick after the flu shot. Maybe it weakens immune response if you're coming down with something else at the same time.

DD (7 months) got it on Friday and has been completely normal.

I just got mine this morning, and DS got his at his 18m appointment a few weeks ago! I don't usually get any side effects. DH usually feels fatigue afterwards.

Both my kids were completely fine that day and night, but extra cranky the next day. Could have been unrelated but seemed like too much of a coincidence. No actual sickness though.
@808love: dh buys into the sickness thing too and usually refuses to get it. I didn't care before but I threw an absolute fit last year when he dragged his feet and we had a December baby!

DD slept like a rock all weekend after her flu shot. I always time her vaccinations for the end of the day on a Friday just in case. No cold symptoms though.

My understanding is it's only contraindicated if you have a fever. I've been getting the flu shot every year for the past 6 or 7 years. The ONLY time I had a reaction was the first year when they had the separate H1N1 vaccine - that thing knocked me on my ass! No cold/flu symptoms, but I had to leave work early and slept for like 15 hours straight! But no reaction to the regular old yearly flu shot. No reaction in the kids, either.

She was fine after hers, and I was fine after mine. I've found that sometimes DD gets a little weird or sniffly the day after a vaccine, BUT I also have to acknowledge that its probably also due to me actively "watching" her to make sure she doesn't get sick. It is probably totally normal behavior, but I'm more acutely aware of her behavior the day after.
But I did always love those looooong naps when she was little after vaccines.as an aside, it was refreshing to not see this thread devolve into pro/anti flu shot and vaccines debate.

Yes, and no- neither one of us has ever gotten sick/cold after the flu shot.

@Foodnerd81: This will be me with my DH this year. We are having a January baby. If he tries to tell me he doesn't want to get it b/c it makes him sick I'll just tell him it's better for him to be sick than the baby, so suck it up, buttercup!

It can't cause the fluid but a mild temp or fatigue are possible. My LO did t have any reaction and didn't last year either. It takes 2 weeks to build immunity, so I would get it ASAP.

We got ours a couple of weeks ago and we didn't have any symptoms or issues afterwards.

I got mine on the 7th and my oldest and middle had theirs last Thursday. We were all fine and have never gotten a reaction or felt sick. My husband gets his on the 26th and my youngest will be 6 months in November and will get it at his wellness visit.

I got mine last week and felt great except for a sore arm... DD got hers early this morning and she could not have have been happier for the rest of the day (after she got her brave girl sticker and Clifford bandaid of course).

No reactions in our family of four. The kids napped really well (and simultaneously) that afternoon. It was magical.

even though we live in hot tropical weather now, our doctor recommended the kids get flu shots so they got them a couple weeks ago. they got them every year in ny and have always been fine.
the first time i got flu shots after having kids, i got really sick for about 24 hours! but haven't had a reaction since.

Once I started taking flu shots, I was a believer. They really did help our family in past years. I was so skeptical at first because of negative experiences in the press and did it really work or not. IRL friends didn't experience anything negative and students in my class seemed to benefit ....I could see who took the shot in my class and who was absent for flu as the year progressed. It took me a couple years to get on board.
ETA: I can't remember when we started. I think it was the first year after LO was born or second. She is 5 now. -
See I know it's a myth, but last year and this year both times after DD has gotten the flu shot she has gotten extremely sick after. This year she had horrible diarrhea for 3 days, which led to a horrible diaper rash for 2+ weeks
I have never gotten the flu shot for myself, I always decline, but our Ped was very adamant about DD getting it. Next year, I'm putting my foot down and saying no to flu shots for everyone....

I had my flu shot on Tuesday. It is now Sunday and I have begun a full blown cold. I know it is a myth but jus' saying. LO better not catch it from me!! She and DH had the shot on Monday and they are just fine.

DD and I had ours on Thursday and no reactions. She was upset while getting it but didn't complain at all after. My arm was sore for two days but that's it.

For the record, I had a super busy week, stayed out late one night and haven't been eating well so I blame myself not the flu shot.
