What are the advantages and disadvantages? I know the mist is live virus. Is there anything to be concerned about with that? Lo is 3 years old , my 6mo old will get the shot. I already got my shot.

We are doing the mist and did it last year as well for my almost 4 yo. My ped and my DH who is a peds resident both favored it but I can't remember why. LO thought it was so awesome that she got her flu shot in her nose instead of as a shot so that is an advantage right there for me!

The flu mist is supposedly more effective in children than the shot. We got the flu mist last year when LO was 2 and it was super easy.

If your child is asthmatic or pre-asthmatic, the mist is not an option. The main benefit is not getting a shot!

Ask your ped. I know no one around an immuno-compromised individual should get the mist because immuno-compromised can catch the disease. Since 1 shot doesn't fully immunize the baby I would be nervous of having a the baby around a toddler with the mist.... but I haven't done by research so it's an uneducated opinion and I'm sure your ped has good info on it

The flu mist and flu shot are equal in terms of protection against the flu. It's more a preference of delivery method. There are more contraindications for the flu mist like age (<2 and >49), asthma, severe immunodeficiency, pregnancy, etc. Your little guy would be safe if you all decided to get the flu mist, it's really only those that care for someone who is severely immunocompromised (like needing a protective environment).

I was told the kid has to be old enough to reliably inhale when getting the mist for it to be effective, so our pediatrician hasn't even offered it yet and they've always gotten the shot. We'll see what she does this year at their 2/4y checkups.
