I would like to bring my double stroller when we travel in S3ptember. Could I wrap it in bubble wrap or something? I really, really, really don't want to buy a travel stroller. I need my stroller. Is this just going to end badly?

I don't know how big your stroller is, but you can gate check it! I've gate checked my B-ready stroller (in single mode, with LOs infant car seat AND base) 3 times and it was fine.
We did switch to an umbrella stroller for travel after LO moved into a convertible car seat.

We travel with our gluxe in the travel bag and gate check it!

Bubble wrap and then in a stroller bag? I don't think they would let us gate check, only because it seems big. I would bring a seat attachment and the bassinet.

You can gate check a double. Get a double travel bag for it and a single or car seat bag for the bassinet.

If you bubble wrap it, doesn't sound like it'll fit in the stroller bag well.
I've put our stroller and carseat into a travel bag together. It's HUGE and heavy as eff, but had no problems gate checking it. Everything arrived on the other side just fine. However, they do mistaken the large bag as a checked bag and it's 50/50 you'll get it back at the gate. If you do get it back, it takes them a good minute to bring it up.

Ok here's a crazy idea. What if I put it in a large, hard suitcase? And just check it under the plane.

If you gate check it, you will need to make sure it's not over a certain weight.
Can you collapse it into a suitcase? I don't think that's a ridiculous thing, lol.

@looch: I think I can. I have a pretty large suitcase! I'm going to try tonight.

@anonysquire: I packed a pack and play into a suitcase before, so I am firmly in camp you gotta try it!

Just FYI, American makes you check check a stroller over 20 lbs. Which was news to us when we checked in. Luckily we have a stroller bag and our stroller came out unscathed!
We were able to gate check our Cruz no problem on United tho...
ETA. The stroller was still free on American even though we had to check check it.

I always gate check my Uppababy Vista without any travel bag and have never had any problems and I know that sucker weighs about 30lbs. It doesn't even have a scratch on it.

@anonysquire: I gate checked my vista with seat and the bassinet in the stroller bag - it's not a double, but it's pretty heavy and I didn't have any issues. I would call the airline and see if they have any restrictions.

@anonysquire: Putting it in a suitcase will cost you versus gate checking at no charge. Just FYI.

We've gate checked several strollers and never had a problem. Getting the BOB through security was slightly annoying due to its size but still no big deal. I say just risk it.

We've gated checked our's numerous times without a bag. It has a few scratches on the sides but heck we probably put some on there ourselves when we load it in the car etc. You could always check the bassinet/attachments. I like having my stroller to use through the airport.

Check your airline's regulations -- call them or check online -- they differ depending on who you fly with. We've always gate checked our strollers (a BOB, an UB Cruz and a UB G-lite) and never had any problems. If you want to be extra careful I know that UB sells a travel stroller cover that comes with an assurance that if your UB is damaged in transit while using the cover they will replace/fix it. So that might be another option too.

@LindsayInNY: Good point. Check your airline, but when we've flown Southwest and Hawaiian it was free to check the stroller, carseat and crib (gate check or check in counter).

Has anyone checked stroller and car seat at check in? It's free and seems so much easier than lugging them through security. We plan to Ergo through security. Is the only downside that the baggage handlers might damage them? Seems like that could just as likely happen if you gate check though?

@PawPrints: We've checked carseat when we check in. I like having the stroller with us in the terminal, although I've also flown sans stroller completely before and that was fine too (when he was smaller and not so darn heavy).

@NorCalWayfarer: Good to know. Yeah I think we'll be okay without the stroller in the terminal since LO will only be 3.5 months old so still pretty small and easy to carry in the Ergo. I'm just trying to think of all possible ways to make the trip easier and that seems like such an easy thing to do so not sure if I'm missing something - everyone else gate checks, it sounds like.

Some of the airlines will let you check baby items with your luggage at no additional cost. I would check with them.

I have flown many times with my Britax B-ready with various accessories to make it a double and I have only had it break once. I saw someone with a gate check bag and thought that was a good idea. I can't survive the airport without my stroller.
I'm flying with my three kids (ages 5, 3, 1) and I'll be 20 weeks pregnant, in August. I'll babywear onto the plan but I need the stroller to lug all the carry ons. And, heaven forbid, if I get stuck somewhere, I want the stroller to let the baby sleep somewhere that isn't the floor.

@PawPrints: that's what we did, we checked both before security. It worked out great for us but your mileage may vary.
@anonysquire: target sells stroller bags, it's basically a canvas trash bag but they aren't expensive. What about grabbing one of those and then wrapping your frame in a blanket if you're concerned about damage? It is still free to check it before going through security but if you want to gate check it you will be fine going through security. I flew with a bugaboo buffalo once and that thing lived up to it's name, the city select would be a cake walk in comparison.
