In a few weeks we're taking the boys to St Lucia for a holiday. W will be a lap infant but B will have his own seat. We'll be at a resort the whole time so don't need a car seat - WWYD? Get the CARES harness? Just buckle him into the seat?

How old? We flew with our 2 year old and just buckled. She was fine. I did hold her for landing once.

We just flew internationally with our 3.5 year old and used the seatbelt. She was really great about leaving it buckled and listening to instructions.

I'm wondering the same thing. We will be flying with the then 2.5 year old in April and it's a loooong flight. I can thankfully borrow a cares harness so I think my plan is to bring it and only bother with it if we hit turbulence or if there's inclement weather for take off and landing. I've heard it's kind of a pain but I am sure I will feel better having it if it gets a bit crazy. The car seat sounds awful though for a long flight even though I do know it's safer.

We've been on 4 flights since lo turned 2, plus a couple others when she was close to 2 and we ended up having an extra seat next to us so she used it, and seatbelt has been fine.

A CARES harness is just a restraint that goes on the seatbelt, think of it as a pair of suspenders. It doesn't have a crotch strap, so it really isn't going to contain a wiggly kid. I bought one and have never used it.
Having said that, seat belt should be fine.
