We are flying to Hawaii this spring and trying to figure out if we should buy LO a ticket or have him sit on our lap.
Pros- Free if he sits on our lap
Cons- Will a 22 month old be happy sitting on mommy/daddy's lap for a long flight?

I would definitely buy a seat... I regretted not doing this when my DD was almost 2 and we flew internationally.

I would absolutely buy a seat. Theres no way I'd do a long flight with a lap toddler.

We flew to the Philippines when Olive was 22 months, and she sat in our laps! We got business class tickets though, using upgrades from frequent flier miles...

I would factor in the size/type of plane too. We were thinking about taking a flight to the coast and the plane is 2 seats on both sides of the aisle. We're prefer to have her on our lap and just be us three on one side of the aisle, but if it's 3 across I'd go for the extra ticket.

We're planning to buy our kids seats and take their car seats on the plane with us. For me, it's a combo of the safety factors, plus I've heard that since kids are used to traveling in their car seat, they can be happier chilling and sleeping there than being stuck on a lap. I might do laps for a super short flight, but all of our flights will be cross country.

That's too long without his own seat, imo. We flew with M when she was 16 months and said if we had to fly again in her second year, there is NO WAY we would not buy her a seat.

@mediagirl: My husbands dad and GF live in Hawaii and they may be moving so we want to visit them before they move

I'm the odd one out who says no ticket, but it's b/c my 22-month-old is suuuuuuper clingy and wouldn't sit alone anyways. Even if we bought a seat, she would just end up sitting in my lap the whole time.

I'd buy him a seat for that long of a flight or hog the middle seat and pray no one asks to sit with you.

I'd probably buy a seat since seats on a plane are so cramped. It'll give both of y'all a little wiggle room.
We recently traveled with DS on a 3.5 hour flight and it seems like DS was slightly uncomfortable sleeping in my arms because of the arm rests and the tight quarters.

For the cost of that flight, I'd save the money then hope for a non full flight and a free seat.

DS will be 20 months when we travel next and I broke down and bought him a seat. If I had upgrades available, I'd consider lapping it b/c the seats are bigger.

I think it would depend on how long the flight is. I flew half way around the world and bought a seat for my youngest who was then 17 months and what does he do? Sat on me the ENTIRE time, literally. Awake and asleep. He's very clingy though. I think it's do-able not to purchase a seat if it's not a long flight. You'll be tired but you'll have extra money to spend in Hawaii. An extra seat is good for spreading out your stuff though.

I am cheap so no. BUT if I had unlimited resources I would buy a seat. Once my son turned 2 I greatly enjoyed strapping him into his carseat in his own seat!
