I'm planning a trip to visit family with my DS, who will be 3.5 months old by then. It will just be the two of us (DH is staying home with our daughter). Travel time isn't too long...we have about a 2 hour flight with a connection to another flight that should be a bit over an hour. Layover times each way are about 1.5 hours. I'm not sure if I should plan to wear him, or use the stroller. The connecting airport is fairly large. Any tips for flying with a baby this young are welcome! Thanks

@CoffeeMom: that's probably the best age to take a baby on a plane--he'll likely sleep for a lot of it because of the loud white noise effect. If you need a stroller at your destination, or a carseat, you can/should take both and gate check them. I have a stroller where the infant seat clicks in, and I have flown solo several times (with 1 kid and with both kids) with that stroller and car seat and gate checked both.
I also take a baby carrier.
My routine is to wear the baby (you don't have to take them out of the carrier for security) and put the car seat through the x-ray machine. The stroller is too big so they wheel it through and then wand it down. Once I'm through security, I may or may not use the stroller (depends on how much time we have at the gate, if I have to use the bathroom, etc).
But when it's about time to board, I go ahead and put the baby back in the baby carrier, and go ahead and put the car seat in the gate check bag, but then plop it back on top of the stroller even though it doesn't click in while in the bag.
Then at the bottom of the gangway, I don't have to struggle with the car seat and gate check bag, I just put it down on the floor, and fold my stroller frame, and hop on the plane (all this while wearing baby).
On the flight, you usually have to remove your carrier straps for take off and landing (depends on airline), but I don't fully unbuckle. I removed the shoulder straps only and put them right back on after take off so baby can sleep.

Babies also tend to have blow outs on planes (it's the air pressure giving their tummies gas), so definitely bring a change of clothes for them just in case of diaper leakage.

I was JUST thinking about this, I'm glad you asked! We'll be traveling to my parents' for Christmas when the baby is about four months old. I'm actually considering just buying a carseat and stroller to leave at my parents' house and use whenever we go there. I don't think they'd mind keeping it there, and then we wouldn't have to lug it around the airport every time.

I always wore/wear lo through the airport and definitely would at that age; no question! The stroller is an additional thing for you to lug around, we travel frequently and have never brought a stroller and never wished we had one (including solo travel with lo too).
Just a heads up that if you wear your lo through security, they may swab your hands for bomb residue. This seems to vary based on airport size/sophistication of equipment at the airport.

I prefer wearing DD in airports. You don't have to follow the 4oz rule for pumped milk or prepared formula

That age (3-4 months) was by far the easiest time we flew with LO. I always wear her through security and I actually kept her in the carrier on the plane when she was that young. They make you unclasp and loosen the straps during takeoff/landing, but she slept the entire time for both flights!
If LO is awake, you may want to feed during takeoff/landing to help with ear pressure, but LO didn't even wake up that time so we didn't bother.
We also bought a car seat to keep at grandparents and have since used it for all our air travel. We have a Cosco Scenera from Walmart (order online) - it's so light to carry and easy to use! We always gate check if LO doesn't have a seat, but even if you have to check it through, at least it's a cheap seat if you have to replace it.

One other thing I've experienced is when bringing pumped milk... You're allowed to carry as much as you want/need, but if the individual bottles have more than 4 oz in them they may need to scan them. It's not a big deal if they do (they just put them in a machine, in my experience, and generally don't even open them) but if I'm thinking about it I spread the milk over a few bottles to keep us moving quickly.

@MrsSCB: That is what I did, I had a car seat and stroller at our destination (either at my parent's home or inlaws). It is so much easier, and I didn't buy the Cadiallac versions.

At that age I wore the baby through security but now I travel with a stroller...at many airports security automatically sends you through the wheelchair lineup which is much shorter.

We tend to take the stroller because it gets you to the shorter line at security and we usually want one at our destination. So we like to gate check the stroller. But we bring the carrier and usually use that in teh airport. Plus, then you can put any extra bags in the stroller.

In your scenario (connecting flight and traveling without DH), I'd wear LO in the airport and check the carseat, stroller, and a suitcase. I'd bring a carry on with lots of diapers and 2 changes of clothes for LO and one change of clothes for me.

We always wear baby (or now toddler) and baggage-check the stroller. When DD was little we would just lay her down on a blanket during layovers etc. Worked great.

Oh man, the blowouts! Definitely need a change of clothes for the baby like @Anagram: said and a change of clothes for the adults. DH needed clean shorts and I needed a clean shirt the time we flew with LO @ 4.5 months.

@looch: exactly, I probably would buy less "fancy" versions of stroller and car seat, but I'm sure I could find things that would be doable for short term.

I would baby wear on the plane but also bring/gate check a stroller. I find it really hard to carry a diaper bag while wearing baby, but the stroller helps immensely for carting bag and/or baby through the airport, esp with a layover
