Nursed on takeoff. Then he fell asleep pretty much the whole time. Nursed on landing if he woke up. but if he was already sleeping I didn't worry about it.
Change LO's diaper right before you board so you (hopefully) don't have to worry about it on the flight. Also you go to the bathroom right before too. DS slept on me the whole time and there was no way I was risking giving him to DH and waking him!

i didn't nurse on takeoff or landing and she didn't seem to mind the change in the pressure.

I only flew with LO once, at 5 months, but yes, we nursed on take off and landing, and most of the time in between. She is a big comfort nurser! Since I knew this would be the case, I brought a travel boppy, which saved my arms from totally falling asleep, and a nursing cover, which helped with privacy, but also to keep it nice and dim under there to help her sleep.
If you have a carrier, wear her for boarding and deplaning, so you have two hands to get your bag or whatever (not totally necessary if you don't wear her).
Agree with changing diaper, and going to the bathroom yourself, right before boarding. I also found it helpful to have a small diaper clutch at the ready-- just a couple of diapers, wipes, and changing pad, so I didn't have to bring the whole diaper bag when I changed her. Or, in my case, when I made DH change her when she pooped on the plane
Check everything you can, bring as little as you can for yourself on the plane (I just brought wallet, phone, and Kindle-- everything else was for her!)
Good luck-- it went a lot better than I had feared!

@Foodnerd81: yes to everything!
My son nursed a ton when we flew with him as a baby, including take off and landing, and didn't sleep much.
Depending on how long your flight is and if you have a connection, I would take at least 3-4 more diapers than you think you'll need. For example, if you would normally need 3 for that time span, I would take 6-7, just in case of delays or unexpected extra poos.

@MrsH: we didn't nurse for take-off and landing but gave him a paci. I also and a small bottle of breastmilk with me should he need something to eat at an inconvenient time (like immigration).

Personally, I nursed if she would, but it was honestly easier to just have to have a bottle of pumped milk in case she started screaming and wouldn't take the paci. I just took a frozen bottle out early and hand carried it through security. If you have a screaming baby it was just easier for me. Whatever works!

@MrsH: how old?
3 months was the easiest flight we ever took with M. She was peaceful and quiet the whole time, compared to her toddler self when we flew when she was over 12 months old. I nursed her, offered bottles, the paci, etc. For the most part, she just slept.

i tried to nurse during takeoff and landing--not sure if it made a difference, but i'm sure it didn't hurt. i'm glad i had my ergo because i had to stand and bounce LO for most of my 5.5 hour flight.

My son wasn't breastfed, so I couldn't have nursed him on landing and takeoff, so we offered him a pacifier or a bottle of water if he wanted it to relieve the pressure in his ears.
The very first flight we took, he fell asleep during taxi and slept through the ascent. He was around 6 months and fine on the flight.
Just a few quick things:
1. bring an extra garbage bag, you'll need it
2. I always pack a foldable tote in my carry on to quickly pack up all the stuff we've taken out during the flight. My goal is to get off the plane as quickly as possible, not puzzle stuff back into carry ons
3. Pack a gallon ziplock with 2 diapers, a travel pack of wipes and a burp cloth. Put this in the seatback pocket in front of you, bring to the washroom for diaper changes
4. Use the air sick bag as a "cover" for your LO's bottle. Put this in the seat back pocket in front of you.
5. Get a small crossbody bag and wear it the entire flight. Put your passport, travel docs, money, etc in it. This way, if you get separated from your carry ons, you're not scrambling to get stuff out

I found flying with LO to be way easier than I expected! I wore her in the Ergo & gave her a bottle during take-off. Then I nursed her to sleep the rest of the flight. Of the three flights she has been on, two of them she slept the entire time. The other one she had a blowout & I was glad I had back up clothes readily available. We traveled with her in zippy sleepers because ain't nobody got time for pants & socks!

@MrsH: perfect!! It is going to be so easy. Are you flying with your spouse? Make sure to pack extra (3 extra for baby, 1 extra for you) outfits (yes, include pants) in a carry-on just in case. Wipes, lots of diapers (double what you think you'll need) and extra blankets. Because...you just never know. But I bet you'll do great! Good luck!

@looch: Some GREAT tips! We've flown with DS several times and I'm planning to use these next time!
Second the carrier, and having a bottle of pumped milk is a great idea. My younger DS is not a comfort nurser and I have trouble getting him to even latch if he's not hungry, so I have to wait at least 2.5-3 hours between nursing sessions. So we will definitely bring a bottle with us!

@mediagirl: yes DH is coming. Thanks I didn't even think about an extra outfit for me.
