It's Food Allergy Awareness week, and I know there are a good number of parents here who have children with food allergies. Let's bring awareness and give each other support! If you or your children have food allergies, introduce yourself and provide a little fact to help educate others.
I have two boys, both with food allergies. My 4 year old is allergic to dairy, eggs, and peanuts. He is starting to outgrow his dairy and egg allergy, and we have an egg challenge coming up in 2 weeks! My 18 month old is allergic to dairy, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, soy, salmon, anchovies, most seeds, and fava beans (the list grows every month). Both have had reactions that landed them in the hospital, and it's challenging to keep them safe at times. I carry Benadryl and epinephrine with us at all times. We live in a society that isn't always allergy friendly, and educating my boys is a high priority of mine.
Little Fact: Between 1997 and 2011, food allergies among children increased 50% and now affect 6 million children (1 in 13 US children). Think about that fact. The next time you bring a treat into school double check with the teacher to see if there are any children with food allergies in your LO's classroom. It greatly helps us as parents, and food safety is so important. Children often feel left out, and celebrations involving food treats can be disappointing for them.
Cute photo added below. This was the first time my LO was able to eat ice cream and order from the store just like everyone else. He was so happy, and I wish I can provide him with more outside food experiences. The next day he had his first Dole Whip . We love Disney World for being so allergy friendly!
