This totally confused me, but people (especially older, non-Asian males) would constantly mistakenly call me "Kim". I know it's a common Korean last name, but it wasn't my last name!

Wow, just amazing!
I get called Mr. Kim by the FedEx and UPS guys. Can't say I love it, but I figure I'm paying for all the women who have suffered similar problems through the years...

my last name is kim, and 80% of the time people think it's my first name. i just go with it. i don't think most people know it's a common korean last name...

@Mrs. Bee: My maiden last name rhymes with Kim, and my first name is Christina, so maybe they were combining both to make Kim?? I'm still so confused...

No. I've had other Asians ask me what I was. Some thought I was Chinese. Some Vietnamese people can't believe I'm Vietnamese. I'm pretty sure that's an insult when people don't believe me.
It's okay. Someone thought I was Hawaiian! I'll take that any day! Lol!

Haha I've never been called Kim.
Most Asians don't think I'm Korean

@mrs. wagon: Maybe the rhyme does have something to do with it. I'm not Asian, but I have had people call me Shannon, which rhymes with my maiden name.

@chopsuey119: How funny cause most Asians don't think I'm korean either! I only get called Kim by non-asians!

OMG yes. My last name rhymes with Kim too, and I swear people are lazy. They read it as Kim like constantly! My husband (who has a different last name and isn't even Korean) knows how annoyed I get and is very quick to correct them and put them in their place.

@spaniellove: Haha yeah, probably! Which probably means we are related... there are only two lines! Do you know the chinese character for yours? Mine is the two trees. If yours is too, we are related

@mrs. wagon: Yes it is! When my family tried to teach me about it, I misheard them and thought they were saying "super". And I thought "wow we're super!"

@spaniellove: haha! yes! we're totally related. Not to be creepy, but do the men in your family have either Byoung for a first syllable or Kyu for a second?
honeydew / 7916 posts
@mrs. wagon: Close - one generation uses Hyung for the first syllable. I wish I knew what the pattern of repeating syllables is; isn't there supposed to be a list of syllables you're supposed to choose from?
blogger / watermelon / 14218 posts
@spaniellove: yup! Apparently there are a few per generation. My brother's son has the first syllable of Jong but I think Hyung was the other option!
