Mine broke not long after I checked into the hospital, so I was in the bed with monitors on at the time. It was several big gushes, so I'm glad it wasn't at home or in public. I had been in labor for quite a while by then though.

I ate hotwings for dinner and at 1 a.m. I rolled over in bed and felt all wet

I've been wondering this too! My OB last week was laughing about how if it breaks on your couch- you have to get a new couch! And how he doesn't have any idea how people could clean their car if it happened there. Made me wonder!

Mine did not happen on its own- they broke it right when I was transitioning (a good 12 hours into labor). It was an unmedicated labor so I remember feeling everything come out (and things really kicked into gear after that!). My daughter came out with a scratch on her head from the hook the OB used to break it actually I heard from the nurses that it happens sometimes which I thought was kind of scary but it was pretty superficial.

@getjazzy: Like you my water broke in the hospital the first time. It was about 45 hours into labor. I was kind of relieved because earlier in labor my doula had me carrying a mason jar to collect a sample. I was so grossed out by that idea.

With labor #2 I covered my bed, couch, car and wore depends. I was super prepared. Labor & delivery happened quickly. After delivery I asked the midwife when my water broke since I was dry when I got to the hospital. She had no idea. I was so bummed.

Mine was just a trickle. I was able to just sit on a towel in the car once we were on our way to the hospital. It didn't gush until I was getting my epidural.

I woke up on the sofa at about 12:45 a.m. and got up to go to the bathroom. As I stood, there was a very audible "pop" and water came gushing out. It really was like in the movies. It was dripping everywhere and I remember I was cracking up because there were puddles on our hardwood floors and I didn't know what to do first- get cleaned up or go tell my husband that it was go time!

I had been laboring quite a while and was probably transitioning. I was on my bed on all fours dealing with a massive contraction when it broke. It pretty much was contained in my pants and I made it to the bathroom without making a mess all over. It kept gushing out with my contractions and totally drenched a pad, soaked another pair of pants and probably got on a towel I sat on in the car.

I woke up at 6:30 and felt my underwear was a little wet. I thought I pee'd in the night. I showered and got ready (in an tank top and underwear). I bent down to get the dog his toy and it just popped and it went all over our hallway. Contractions didn't start for an hour or two later so I cleaned it up and waited for DH to come home.

I was watching TV and got up to get a snack and WHOOSH there it came! It got on the carpet so I sort of hobbled to the bathroom to "leak" on the towels... DH was at a neighbor's house so luckily he was able to get home in a few minutes. I remember that it just.kept.gushing! (I had no contractions prior to it breaking). Definitely a surprise!

@kjpugs: I have an hour drive each way to work so I wrapped my car seat in a heavy duty trash bag and had an old towel on top.

I woke up to pee around 5:30 am and when I stood up it trickled down my leg. It didnt gush until hours later at the hospital.

I had just gotten my epidural and found out I was 8cm when my water broke! I had forgotten that it hadn't broken prior and thought I wet myself!

It broke on its own during labor, about an hour and a half before I delivered.

@kjpugs: I have leather in my car. Thank goodness! If it were cloth, it would have been mega gross.

Mine broke while I was in the grocery store but it was a slow leak I thought I peed myself a bit but it continued slowly for a couple hours. I just wore a large pad and changed it when needed. I didn't go into labor for 5 hours...when I did start getting contractions labor only lasted two hours.

I was walking out of birth class. We had just watched the birthing videos and we joke that LO couldnt wait to have his own entrance. I didn't realize what had happened right away, but figured it out pretty quick. It was a huge gush and I was soaked.DH ran to find the nurse who ran the class but she was already gone. We went home to grab some things since my bag wasn't packed yet at 35 weeks. I sat on towels in the car and went to the hospital to have a baby. The worst was walking into the hospital in squishy flip flops. 8 hours later, he was here.

This time I will be packing much earlier. I was so freaked out while packing my bag I packed tank tops (not nursing), several pairs of underwear including a thong, my iPad, and camera. Yeah, definitely not thinking straight. Luckily we live 5 minutes from the hospital so DH ran home the next day to get all the things I needed.

130am I got up to pee and it broke in the bathroom. My mom cleaned it up the next day. The good thing was that I went off work early because I should have been at work at the time.

With my first it broke in the early morning while i was sleeping. We were visiting my parents and luckily they had a waterproof mattress pad underneath! it was a large gush (and subsequent gushes). I'm not sure who cleaned it, but i'd guess my mom! For my second the midwife broke my water at 7cm in a hospital bed, not as exciting

Mine broke on the nurses's hand when she was checking my cervix during labor. It was 5-6 hours before delivery (of a 27 hour labor).

Mine broke in the middle of the night we had just got home a few hours prior from my husbands birthday party (he was intoxicated) he was sleeping I went to go pee like I normally did at that time, walked back into the bedroom sat on the bed and said I think my water is breaking. Walked back into the bathroom into the bathtub and it just started gushing and it didn't really stop. I waddled down my apartment hallway with a towel between my legs. My husband had previously packed garbage bags and towels in the truck (our birth class teacher recommended this) thank god he did.

I keep joking with the guys at work that I hope it happens when they are all here just to scare the crap out of these young guys
