We've tried having wood cut at home depot and lowe's. One place actually charged per cut after one "free" cut. I think it was home depot. Lowe's did it but only to cut it down to fit in the car and they don't guarantee a perfect size-it's more like an estimate. I would say buy or rent a saw. Make sure you get safety glasses! They really aren't that hard to use. Both my husband and I have used our saw and feel comfortable.

I'm planning to make a raised bed this weekend and will cut the wood ourselves after we have it cut down to fit in our car. For something basic like a raised bed, it doesn't have to be a perfect precise cut

We've done both. We cut at Home Depot/Lowe's when we buy wood by the foot and cutting it down to size saves us money. In those cases they have a hand saw set up for you to use yourself. Otherwise we cut at home, but we're both pretty handy and have all the tools we need. If you don't have the tools already, or don't feel confident enough to make your own cuts, I would have them cut it for you. Cheaper to have to pay for a few cuts than for you to mess up a board and have to buy a new one!

We have a saw at home now, but sometimes wood comes bigger than will fit in the car. Home Depot and Lowes both seem to cut for free here, and its much faster for them to cut down the big pieces anyway.

They sometimes have good deals this time of year on the raised bed kits at Home Depot - I got some last year on sale that were about the same cost as buying wood.

You can also rent saws by the hour/day from HD/Lowe's. I would do that; maybe. I'm sort of afraid I might somehow take an arm off or something

We have a few different types of saws... but I have no idea what kind they are. DH wanted to start the initial process of finishing our basement, so he has a bunch of different tools to do the framing

HD/Lowes only do certain cuts, we have a Miter saw and circular saw because we build a lot of our own furniture.
