It took one day and she cried on and off for 15-20 for each nap/bedtime. This was just so she could fall asleep on her own--we weren't having any MOTN wakings.

She never got to the full on hysterical cry. If she did, it wouldn't have worked...she only does that when there is really something wrong. After the first day, she would whine for maybe half a minute after being put down...then this gradually reduced and a month later, she doesn't usually make a peep.

Depends on if you mean for bedtime or MOTN wakings. CIO did not work for us for MOTN; she cried until we fed her, no matter how long we waited (longest attempt was 90 mins). Bedtime was a different story.. she cried max 30 mins and it wasn't hysterical, more of a whine. After 3-4 night she put herself to bed with no crying.

It took nearly two weeks, but the first week we did the ferber method with the checks, and I "broke the rules" and touched/soothed him depending on how upset he seemed.

The second week was when we tried extinction.

For the first few days the crying was usually 30 min +, but it was down to about 20 by the next week and eventually none. But it took a while!

Are you asking about falling asleep or for MOTN wake-ups? We did full-in CIO for wake-ups and it took DD about 3 nights to sleep straight through, max 30 mins crying. DS, on the other hand (they're twins) has cried upwards of 2 hours and his sleep is still a work in progress...

both kids were very easy to sleep train. i have detailed notes on the how long for both kids on the blog!

@Sparkler: For us it became about loading LO up on calories during the day since we determined she was really hungry in the MOTN, and not waking up out of habit. I think it might be working but it's a work in progress.

@Smurfette: Don't want to thread jack, but how did you stop the MOTN feedings? I feel like CIOing isn't working but maybe I'm not committed enough... (giving up after 15 minutes or so...)

@jojogirl: think it's part if it and then craving closeness since she doesn't want to be held during the day. She eats a ton of solids, but even when we give her a bottle with fast flow she only takes 3, sometimes 4 oz, max. When my husband goes in at night she will only take 1 oz and keeps crying, but if I nurse her she will calm down and eventually go back to sleep. Seems like it's adding to the problem, but when we try to solve the problem we don't sleep, literally. She is 11 months so I am sure she will eventually deal with the seperation, hunger, teething, habit or whatever, but some days I feel hopeless. She Always wakes up smiling and laughing, so we forgive her each morning!

@knittylady: At 6 months, our pedi told us to just cut it since she was back to 3-4 wake ups a night. She said that R didn't need to eat over night and would then eat better in the day. So that night we just let her CIO every wake up. How old is your LO? You will have to do longer then 15 mins, at least in my experience.

I will add that she had STTN before, so we knew she could do it. She didn't handle her first teeth well, so she got use to Mom nursing her back to sleep.

@JoJoGirl: Woo hoo!! So excited for you cause I know how much you have been waiting for this day. That is a lot of food. She eats more then R!

@Smurfette: It's crazy! And we always have to stop feeding her because we run out of time and not because she's finished. She ate an ENTIRE HALF AN AVOCADO last night in addition to chicken and puree broccoli. She's a machine.

@knittylady: What is the longest LO has gone without eating over night?
@JoJoGirl: R eats a half an avocado all the time. Day care is amazed that she eats it. I guess the other parents don't send anything like it.

@knittylady: Seriously teething is the devil. I would do something, even to just get back to the one wake up. Hugs! It is hard but in the end happier household.

We did sleep training at 10 months to get ds to go to sleep on his own without a pacifier. He cried maybe 5 mins and fell asleep on his own. Night 2, no crying. We've only had crying at bedtime maybe 2 times since then.

We did a second round at 1 year to try to lengthen his sleep and cut out a few night wakings, and that was much harder and took longer. Maybe 2 weeks? Every night was different, but eventually we went from 4 or 5 wakings, down to 2... And then 1. Now, if we could just get rid of this pesky last one!
