For christmas we decide annually how much we want to spend and divide by 12, then save that amount each month. For other gifts we decide the amt in our budget monthly depending on who we need to buy for.

We have a gift category! We also have a small savings account for gifts, and budget gift $ even on months we don't need to buy any. We just put it in the account.

I don't buget much, meaning: I don't have too many catagories.
I pretty much have:
essential bills: morgage, insurance..
other expenses: grocieries, gas, co-pays
and then we have:
spending money: entertainment (eating out, movies, ordering take out), shopping (clothing needed that month, decor for the home, gifts for friends)
extra money: manicures, luxury type items (dh bought a tablet last month)..
