I'm planning to formula feed and cloth diaper when my baby is born. I've read that you can just toss a poopy diaper when breastfeeding into the washer with no rinse required but I haven't seen anything about if you formula feed. Does anyone know if it's the same or do you need to rinse first before washing?

My understanding is you need to rinse! Only breastmilk gets the free pass until solids are in the picture.

You should rinse first if baby is formula fed. Breastmilk poop is water soluble but formula poop is not - so it won't just wash away as easily. When we were using cloth for my formula fed LO we used a diaper sprayer to spray off the poopy diapers in the toilet before putting them in the wet bag. I had a wet bag near the changing area for pee diapers, and a separate one in small trashcan in the bathroom near the toilet for the poop ones. (That way you aren't trying to walk back to the wet bag with a soaking wet gross diaper!)

Hmm...I have just been tossing the formula poop diapers right into the pail, with the exception of the few that were thick enough to plop in the toilet. If it is stuck to the diaper I'm not spraying, and I haven't had any issues. I wonder if maybe I should be? I didn't even think of this haha.

@Mrs. Lion: @Mrs. Sunshine: I thought because it isn't soluble it builds up in your washing machine/ puts wear on the parts more? So even it does come out of the diaper, its still not necessarily gone totally cleaned out of your machine?
Either way, we stopped cloth diapering our formula fed baby because his Nutramigen poops were just too nasty and huge to deal with!

We always ran a rinse cycle in the washer but that was it
