Haven't made the transition yet, but our pediatrician doesn't suggest it until 12 months. At her 12 month appt I assume we will discuss it and we will do what he suggests

@DillonLion: will you keep me posted? I didnt ask at his 9 month but I feel like he hardly drinks any formula these days

Ours has been a little different because M was milk protein intolerant. She was on hypoallergenic formula and her GI recommended we transition over a week, substituting one ounce of formula for cows milk the first day, two ounces the second day, etc. M has taken it just fine, and I thought she might refuse it! Her doc recommended we start the transition 2 weeks before her first birthday so she would be able to have dairy at her party if she did ok with the milk.
Her only problem has been constipation so I've cut down the ounces for each bottle. We're going to handle the bottle to cup transition in the next few weeks but I know some people do that at the same time.

@wheres_c: yeah! I asked at her 9 month and they said not to change anything until after she turns 1

We just started giving lo whole milk after her 12 month appointment, and she drank it like nothing had changed! our doctor suggested we try that before mixing with formula. the transition was surprisingly smooth!

Hmm, my pediatrician said we could start phasing it in around 11 months.... one bottle of cow's milk here and there or mixing it half and half... I'm not in a rush though and I think I'd wait until 12 mo. She is getting breastmilk, formula, and toddler transition (9 mo+) right now...she gulps down the bm, so I think she prefers it, but she drinks both kinds of formula without any problem.

We are just doing it now. (LO turned 1 about 2 weeks ago.) We saw the doctor for his 12 month appt last week and she gave permission to switch to whole milk. She said we could just drop the formula cold turkey, but recommended we try a more gradual approach. Also she didn't really care "how" or "when" he was getting it as long as he averages around 16oz a day. Prior to the switch, LO was taking 2 sippy cups a day and a bottle at bed. Basically she said to switch out one sippy cup of formula for milk first, then switch out the other sippy cup a few days later and finally the bottle. Right now we're at 2 sippy cups of whole milk (4oz each) and one bottle of formula. We're going to finish out the formula we have and then switch over altogether.
Honestly it's been pretty much a non-event for us. He seems fine with the milk. Day care mentioned he's been drinking it much more slowly than he used to drink the formula, and for the first time ever, he doesn't always finish it, but he seems to be getting enough.
One tip: I first tried mixing the formula and milk and he spit it up. Didn't seem to agree with his stomach. I'm assuming it was the mixing because it hasn't happened since.
Hope that helps! Sorry it was so long:)

Our ped suggested going cold turkey from formula to milk as well as getting rid of bottles. My LO *hates* milk of any kind (cannot emphasize this enough....she goes on hunger strike when given any kind of milk!), so we give her toddler formula first thing in the morning and at night before bed. The ped said it wasn't necessary as LO loves cheese and yogurt and eats both every day, but said it was up to us how long we kept using the toddler formula.

Thanks for all the responses so far
I feel like B is a bit on the skinny side, and he doesnt eat a whole lot....a little oatmeal for breakfast, a puree pouch for lunch and some of what we eat for dinner.
I feel like when I start transitioning, I'm going to be taking away all his nutrients.

@wheres_c: I'll add that LO eats a lot of regular food too - otherwise I would have felt more like you do about taking away all the nutrients (and I still do worry about that a little, hence the morning/night formula of about 6-8oz. each). When we transitioned off formula, LO ate a breakfast of egg/fruit/waffle/pancake/etc., a full lunch of table food (meat/protein, veggies, fruit and carb) and a full dinner of table food as well, as well as 2 solid food snacks a day.

@yoursilverlining: Thanks! We're avoiding egg due to an allergy, so I feel like he doesnt get much substantial food. I think i'll need to increase his solids.

We're doing it right now at 11.5 months. He's been FF since he was 3 months old and we're switching straight to whole milk. We're on day 4 of mixing formula with whole milk and its going really well. We're basically just waiting to finish off the container of formula that we have left. He's drinking about 16 ounces of the mixed milk per day.
ETA: He's also eating 3 solid meals and 2 snacks per day.

we did it at 13 months because our formula lasted that long, and we had been traveling. we did a verrrry slow switch by mixing increasing amounts of cow's milk over 3 weeks.
charlie ended up having a mild cow's milk allergy and we switched to soy very briefly, and then hemp which he still drinks today.

We made the switch to cow's milk pretty much cold turkey. We switched his daytime bottles over to sippy cups of milk for about a week, and then took the nighttime bottle away after that. It was a very painless experience for us. LO LOVES milk!

Our Doc said around 10 to 11 months. He said you could do cold turkey switch but that it would upset the tummy a bit. Or you could do 1oz mixed with formula for a few days and then up the amounts every few days. I plan to start closer to the 12 month mark because he also said that we would have to do a vitamin supplement unless he was eating more table foods. Which we aren't eating a lot of table foods. Plus I have a trip coming up where Grandma will be with him for a week and I don't want to put the burden on her to mix formula and then add milk... too much for her to remember!

I'm in the process now (she's one next week) we've been doing 4 oz. formula mixed with 2 once of soy milk right now, next week we will do 3/3, and then 2oz formula/4 oz milk and then it's all milk! So far so good, she doesn't seem to notice!

@wheres_c: I never used toddler formula. I when she reached 12 months I gradually cut out one bottle of formula and replaced with milk. She never really liked milk so then I just introduced more cheese and yogurt
