Found a freakin tick on my 4 mth old's head today. Taking her to the dr on call in an hour. I feel so bad, I literally had her pinned up against me so my DH could try to pluck it off without ripping out too much of her hair and we couldn't get it...the screams coming out of her was horrible and now I'm going to have to go through it again at the dr

I saw this thing where you take a cotton ball and put dish soap on it. You swab it around for about 20 seconds and then the tick should come right out onto the ball. You could try that while you wait! If you google it, a bunch of sites come up about it.

I use a cotton ball with as warm of water that is tolerable/safe. Just place the cotton ball over the tick and usually they will back out. Since they breath through the part of their body that is exposed if you cover it they will usually come out.

Eek! Sorry that happened to you and your sweet babe.
I found a tick on my DD last summer when she was only 3 months old. I was able to remove it fully in tact. I kept it on a cotton ball and brought it to my doctor's office so we could have it tested. Thankfully it wasn't carrying Lyme.

Just want to point out that the only kind of ticks that carry Lyme disease are Deer ticks/black legged tick. They are much smaller than wood ticks. When they're engorged they're barely the size of a wood tick that is not.

If you found it pretty much right away, you LO should be just fine. A tick has to be latched on at least 24-36 hours before the possibility of Lyme transmission. Another way to get it off is to rub the tick in a circular motion... it makes them dizzy and they pop right off. We've done it at least a dozen times on my husband and dog. You never want to just yank and risk their fangs(or whatever they are called) breaking off and being stuck in you. Ticks are so gross. Hope everything is ok!

Thanks for all the tips and will try them out next time she gets one on her. Definitely a bit of crying at the office but the ped was able to get it off her.

Ah! Sorry this happened. I happened to find one on my kiddo's blanket after we went to the store one day! Haven't even gotten one on myself, let alone going out to the store. Wonder if this year is worse for ticks or something?

@PixieStix: I've heard at least in our area that this is an awful year for ticks! That they are so bad that our nature park by our house that we used to take walks in has warning signs up!

I was all excited this past winter because we finally had more than 1 deer in our backyard -- a group of 8 wandered along on Christmas Eve! Now I'm not so excited about it...

This must be a horrible year for ticks. There is a small hill with a few trees and shrubs on the side of DD's preschool where the kids play after pickup, and yesterday no fewer than 6 adults and LOs had ticks after just 20 or 30 minutes of playing. And we are in a fairly urban area. Ugh!

I realize this post is a couple of days old but I saw some suggestions for removing ticks that can increase the risk of transmitting lyme disease (if the tick is a deer tick/black legged tick).
NEVER! put any kind of chemical or detergent on a tick to remove it. Ticks regurgitate some juices back into their host when they detach after completing a blood meal, are stressed, or injured during removal which is how disease is transmitted. Grasping the tick by the head (which is hard because they embed their mouths into their host) with fine pointed tweezers and using firm but gentle and even motion is one way to remove them. A second way to remove a tick is using a twisting device that cradles the tick's body but applies no pressure to the body. The tick should be twisted in one direction only (not back and forth) but clockwise or counter clockwise does not matter. The goal is removing the tick without separating it's body from the mouth/head, because mining the head out of someone or yourself after the body is pulled off is really hard and painful. I work with an outdoor education program in the Northeast and have my fair share of interactions with ticks (unfortunately because they are disgusting, terrible creatures)

Oh my gosh, how scary! Glad it came off at the Dr's, and glad it wasn't a deer tick. We've found a tick on LO two days in a row! And they were the tiny deer ticks
Fortunately, we were able to get them off, and they were not feeding/engorged so I know infection risk is minimal, but omg, so gross.
The pediatrician reminded us to do a thorough tick check every night before bed. Lyme disease can't be passed on unless the tick has been feeding for 24+ hours.
