Sadie had a pretty bad UTI at the end of June, and I'm pretty sure she has another one. She's got a little fever and has been messing with her "butter bean," which she never does. When I touch the area she cries.
The doctor said if she gets another one it could indicate a problem. This would be the second one in a little over a month, so that worries me a little. Anyone have experience with multiple UTI's?

My cousins little girl had this and I recall they had to install a shunt to fix the problem. I don't have too many details but she is 10 or so now and just fine.

I had this problem as a toddler/young child. Turns out I just had super sensitive skin. Being a super vigilant about not using any scented products (dipes, wipes, toilet paper, soap, etc....), not sitting in a tub of soapy water for too long, and keeping clothes loose and cotton helped a lot.

@Madison43: We've been using all of the same products since she was a newborn and we've never had any problems. I wonder why they would be an issue now...?

@photojane: Chloe had one when she was 4 months old. We were told if you get one at such a young age you're more prone to them, especially until you're three.
The concern is reflux. It could damage the kidneys. She hasn't had a second infection but has been tested a few times. Sky high fevers are a warning sign for her, so we don't mess around with them and see the ped quickly.

I had them often as a kid, but it turns out it was a result of too many bubble baths. My parents stopped the bubble baths and I never had another one (not even as an adult).
Any chance you use a lot of soap in the bath?

@Mrs. Jump Rope: I have bad kidneys, so I am super paranoid about her. The fever is what tipped me off today too!
@swurlygurl: She does take bubble baths a couple times a week, but the doctor said that wouldn't cause it. There's never actually been any real link between soap/bubble baths and infection. We're waiting for a culture result, but hopefully it's not even a UTI!

a friend of mines daughter was getting frequent UTI's, they changed her bubble bath and she hasn't gotten one since(id say it's been over a year and a half since her last one, she it's turned 3)

Since it's so close to the last one, I wonder if the antibiotics got them all last time? Maybe it only got partially knocked down last time.

I also got them as a kid and it was from bubble baths. Once we stopped the soap in the bathwater, I didn't have any more issues (until I was an adult, but that was a different issue).

@photojane: like others said I have repeatedly been told that bubble baths can result in UTIs. A girl that my friend nannies would get them often and finally landed in the ER bc it eventually developed into a kidney infection and the docs told her NO BUBBLE BATHS (she would take them a few times a week). Since they stopped no more UTIs. Same deal with my neighbor'a girl - she got UTIs and they thought she was just sensitive...ummm, they finally stopped the bubble baths and no more UTIs

@Mrs. Jump Rope: @GrapeCrush: She gave me some medical paperwork about pediatric urology and it said that there is no link between bubble baths and UTIs (in other words no science that says bubble baths cause UTIs). Maybe it just irritates if you're already developing one or are more prone to them...? I have no idea! All I know is that she said we didn't need to stop.
She's been getting bubble baths since she was a newborn, and hasn't had a UTI this summer. When she first got the UTI we were in Mexico where we didn't even have a bathtub, so obviously no bubbles. I'm wondering if like @Grace: said, the last antibiotic didn't catch it all...? I'm no doctor, so I have no idea how these things work. I'm just really hoping it's not a UTI, because if it is she'll have to have a catheter dye test & she will HATE that.

@photojane: I was a nanny for a little Sadie, and she too had frequent UTIs. We stopped doing bubble baths, and they went away. It's worth a shot!

@photojane: If she has to have the voiding cystourethrogram, you can usually request that they schedule it with sedation. Which really means that they give her versed 20 minutes prior to the procedure. It won't knock her out, but it has amnesiac properties. (i.e. she may still fight the catheter, but she won't remember it.) Most parents tell me that it makes the process WAY smoother.

We thought Penny had one recently, she was in pain with blood in her urine. But, the culture came back negative. The first thing the ped asked was if she takes bubble baths. She took her one and only a week before. They said that it may not be a UTI but that bubble baths often cause serious irritation with similar symptoms. Hang in there and I hope Sadie feels better soon!!

@photojane: bubble baths do not directly cause a uti, but some bubbles may contain ingredients that irritate the urinary tract.
We were told to completely avoid it since Chloe was young (4 months) and systemic. They were especially worried about reflux.
