When did you start separating the two?
DD1's first was the only year we had a legit big party where we invited extended family and friends. Her 2nd and 3rd we celebrated with immediate family only. I'm thinking for her fourth it might be fun to start throwing her friend parties! It would help cut down on cost to not invite extended family we don't regularly see anyway.

@regberadaisy: yes at age 4 she wants to celebrate with her friends. We may try to convince her to just do cupcakes at school though.

Well C has only had one birthday, so I can't answer for her. But growing up I remember having friend parties and family parties. Neither were a huge to do or anything, just good and cake at our house. My sister and I have birthdays a month apart so we would have a joint family party in between but our own friend parties.

This year was the first friend birthday that didn't include extended family. And everyone was butthurt, but I wasn't throwing a party for a 3 year old where I had to feed 85 people, so too bad.

I think we will finally have a birthday party for my son this year. He will be 5. The problem is that his birthday falls between holidays at the end of the year, so it's always a busy time for everyone. So far we have only had small family birthday celebrations with just us and my ILs.

We are thinking about having a separate friends party this year when DS turns 3 but only because our house set up makes it difficult to host a lot of kids and our family members with disabilities. We may just skip the friend party altogether but I think DS would enjoy it this year!

@skipra: my D-D turned 3 and I absolutely agree she would've loved a friend party today! Financially it couldn't happen this year so I brought cupcakes to daycare. Hoping to have one for her 4th!

For 2, 3, 4 we had a friend party. Thinking of going the other way and having a family and friends blowout for number 5. We will have to see how the finances go for the next six months though.

We did it at 2. We went out the dinner with family and then had friends around for a party. Our house is small and I just wanted to spend some time with our friends and their kids.

I think for my second child we're going to do small family parties until 3. Certainly for a first birthday, and probably for the second. I just went to yet another first birthday party where the kid was overwhelmed and sick of it, and everyone else was just hanging out oblivious. It really solidified my desire to do just a very small, low key family thing for that first birthday.
My daughter is going to have her fourth birthday a month or two after her sister comes this summer, so I'm already thinking of really low key plans. We'll make some cupcakes, get some nice snacks, and take chalk and bubbles to a nearby park. It'll be simple and awesome.

@regberadaisy: Our plan is pretty much the same as yours We had big 1st birthday parties (not too big-- 40ish people) for both our kids, and nothing planned until they start preschool if they want "friend" parties. Even for H's 1st birthday, we already had less family members come since he was our 2nd kid.
Our kids don't go to daycare, or else I could see us throwing C a friend party next month for her 3rd. She's kind of asking for one already, just with her neighborhood friends and our friends' kids.
