DH is Vietnamese so we'd love to adopt from there since we are already familiar with the culture.

@Mrs. Pen: we've discussed it, but we'd like to have a few biological children first. If we still want more kids after that or for some reason can't have anymore on our own, then we would adopt.

I used to think about international adoption but if I were to ever adopt again it would be an older child from the US. The fact that so many age out of the system without ever finding a family breaks my heart. I wish I could be a mother to all of them.

@Mrs. Train: @Mrs. Pen: If we actually end up adopting, it would def be from the U.S.--there's no way we'll have international adoption money! And I doubt it would be an infant, but young would be nice. I have heard that in Eastern European countries, girls who age out without being adopted are pretty much guaranteed to become sex workers, which makes me want to adopt from somewhere over there, although that may be the case in lots of countries, here included.

I always felt called to adopt a child from a Latin American country. My family has such strong emotional ties to South America and the Hispanic culture. I always wanted to adopt from Guatemala, but they recently closed adoptions. Now I think it would probably be either Colombia or the US.

@Mrs. Pen: Ha, I should be more clear--we could afford to foster to adopt only! Which would most likely end up being just a few thousand dollars.

Sex trafficking is just so sad...I have been watching Law and Order: SVU nonstop while sitting here on baby watch and it is truly sickening to think that it's so common all over the world!

Knowing that there is a much higher risk of coercion and power differential in international adoptive situations and knowing that deeper connections with birth families is good for adoptive kids puts me in the domestic camp... But I respect others' decisions to choose differently and secretly would love to bring a Mongolian baby into our lives... Unfortunately, my reasons wouldn't be pure... It would be because I think those babies are adorable an I'd love to visit and learn about a place that seems remarkable to me.

@Mrs. Jacks: Same sentiments here. I think there's a lot of unethical behavior in international adoption and I'd never feel comfortable. I'd go with an older child from the US. Preferably 7+ years.

Korea because Korean babies are the cutest, but if I had to adopt I would adopt from America. A Korean baby from America haha

I would love to have a multicultural family (obviously this is possible with US adoptions as well) and adopt from other countries, but my DH is pretty against it, he thinks we need to focus on where we live, and I see his point, we have many children who need families in the system now, I would really like to foster at some point. I also would worry about ethical issues in other countries.

I should say as an aside that I do think it's a little different for people with strong heritage/background in another country. Like if you speak Korean and have family there, adopting from Korea kind of makes sense, you know? Or if you worked for a few years in Africa (like I did) and met a certain child during that time, that makes sense too.

@Mrs. Pen: that's funny we said the same thing. I just have too much hurt for their stories and I know I have enough love, really it's just finances. Ummm... And not having my husbands head explode at the thought of more kids.

I do understand why people pick international, I sometimes still feel like that would be good but I always come back to helping in my own country.

we would consider adopting from nigeria. DH is nigerian. ideally, we would be interested in providing foster care & possibly then adopting children of with nigerian backgrounds already in the US. we have a pretty large west african immigrant population in our area so that wouldn't be unheard of to have first generation children in need of families with similar backgrounds. we feel that it would be beneficial for the children to be in a family who could try to maintain some of their connection to their heritage & with my ILs being very active in the igbo community here & having homes/family still in nigeria, we would be able to do that.

@mrs. bird: That's why I wish we could adopt from Sri lanka! But they don't even let diaspora adopt (as far as I know), which is sad! They also won't let foreign nationals living in SL adopt.
