My sister in the peace corps in Armenia is having to show some movies to her language class. Age 16-28, have to be appropriate to show not only for that age group but for Armenia. So no major sex anything, or stuff that can be culturally taboo like cross dressing (we had to rule out She's The Man because of that.) Any suggestions? Poor girl is NOT a TV/movie person and is struggling to come up with some ideas!

Is there supposed to be a cultural component to the class? Something like "The Wizard of Oz" might work for that. Or maybe something that they might already know the plot to, like a movie version of a Shakespearean play?

@honeybear: I don't think it's cultural as much as language based. Apparently they have some language understanding but this is to continue with it, it's more of an understanding that makes humor important? She's thinking about Monsters Inc and Ferris Bueller's Day Off right now.

@kjpugs: I meant is part of the goal to introduce the students to cultural references that are made in English-speaking countries? That's a huge part of becoming fluent in a language. (For example, a Frenchman might look at you oddly if you spoke excellent French but had no idea who Camus was.) If so, I'd go with classic movies, although I feel like "Ferris Bueller" might fit that bill.
