Whenever M is fussy I start singing "Get Lucky" and her eyes open wide and she stops fussing immediately!
Are there any funny/odd soothing techniques that work for your LO??

Right now my LO (15 months) has the weirdest soothing technique: sticking her hands in my armpits. She rubs and pinches the skin there, she loves to do it when she's falling asleep or crying. I am trying to find an alternative.

When A was little, we tried the Happiest Baby "ssshhhhhh" technique. But, my throat would hurt after a while, so I substituted the work "poop." I'm the weirdo mama who would scream poop at her baby's face when he got out of control. He calmed down immediately.

When we were in the car and E was having a meltdown we'd crack open the window next to him. A bit of fresh air on his face always calmed him right down! And it still works now!

Sometimes my husband will mimic the baby's cries. It often gets her to stop! Worked best when she was really little.
Now, singing anything is the best hands-off trick we have.

@mrsjazz: That is so cute. And slightly off-putting, I bet.
For Lorelei, if she is hurt, she really likes trying to figure out where she wants me to put what she calls, "kiss medicine." Usually she gets so absorbed in figuring out where exactly she got bumped or scraped that she gets over it really fast.
We are actually working with Ellie on strategies for calming down when she is upset. She's been doing deep breathing using this ball: http://www.amazon.com/John-N-Hansen-M1335-Hoberman/dp/B0000E6I1F/ref=pd_sim_t_1. She practices visualizing her breath going in and out. She really likes it!

We turn on the vacuum cleaner - when he's overtired it will always calm him down, and sometimes puts him straight to sleep.

@lawbee11: haha! That's cute! I dance and sing all the time to soothe K, or to make her laugh. DH talks to her in a high pitched voice and pretends to be a Teletubbie with exaggerated movements and that usually makes her stop fussy and laugh too.

@mrsjazz: Charlie did something very similar with shirt sleeves! He started off rubbing the sleeves of his onesies between his fingers but over time, he switched over to using my shirts when I was putting him down. Eventually he adopted my shirt as his lovey... I ended up just giving him a few of my tees.

@FutureMrsMcK: Ooh that's a great tip!
@lawbee11: Soo cute! Do any songs work, or is it just Get Lucky?

@mrsjazz: M loves this, too at 14 months. She also likes to pull at the skin around her belly button.

@mrsjazz: LOL! That is so bizarre!
@shopaholic: DH sings television theme songs to her. She isn't really a fan but does sometimes quiet down when he sings the Gilligan's Island theme song.
@mrbee: She also likes when I sing "I Will Wait" by Mumford & Sons, but "Get Lucky" is her fave. I need to work on memorizing the lyrics...after a while I usually end up just repeating "We're up all night to get lucky" over and over again!

When Chloe was an infant, singing Christmas songs worked! She especially loved "up on the rooftop" but we forgot the words so we made up on our to the tune. Always worked.... Wish it still did!
Now the boo-boo bunny fixes everything.
