Where do you keep your garbage cans? DH likes to keep them in the backyard. As a kid we kept ours in garage. I’d prefer to keep them on the side of the house since they attract flies! Where are yours?

Driveway next to the garage, which is on the side of the house. Ours don’t actually attract flies- I guess because the kids are so heavy and always closed? We have plenty of bugs in general so now that seems weird!
ETA: we used to keep them in the garage next to the door to the house, which was nice to be able to bring garbage/ recycling without going outside. But we can’t pull them out without moving a car and now we yard stuff and kid toys there isn’t room.

Ours are in the backyard next to the fence. That way we can easily pull them out to the street. It’s a pain to take the garbage out though since we have to walk all the way across the yard. But there really is no other place for us to keep them.

I don’t remember where we kept the garbage cans growing up. I lived in a split level. The kitchen was next to a deck that opened to our lawn. Our garage & driveway was on a level below.
We keep ours in the garage because our HOA is pretty active. In our last house we could wheel the garbage cans over to the side of the house and keep them out of sight.

They are kept in the alley behind our house where the garbage trucks empty them.

@Foodnerd81: we have compost included in the city trash so that’s probably why the flies come. We didn’t have that growing up so it makes sense that you don’t.
@KT326: that’s where ours currently are. We could move them to the side of the house but then they’re out in the open and my husband doesn’t like the way it looks.
@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: we live in a split level now so it’s a pain to take the trash downstairs but not too bad. And I lived in an hoa growing up which is probably why they were in the garage!

Technically we’re not allowed to keep garbage bins where it can be seen from street. We leave ours in garage but our neighbors hide it on the side of their house amongst their bushes. It’s annoying bc they never close the lid tightly and trash flies into our yard. We’ve been having summer storms, and yesterday their whole garbage can tipped over and trash flew all over our back and front yard

Ours is in the 3rd garage bay, but our HOA requires they're in the garage or behind a fenced area out of site. Eventually I'd like to get a concrete pad and a little fence to get it out of the garage, but that's a ways down the project list.

Along the driveway next to garage, which is the side of the house. We have a long drive with detached garage.

I would prefer outside beside the house, but ours is in the garage because there are steps from the side to the driveway. Flies aren’t a problem since the pails are very secure. The only issue is the stink in the summer heat.

Out by the street in one of those giant plastic garbage can containers.

We used to keep it in the garage but would get smelly in the summer so we now keep them on the side of the house

Side of the house. No way we'd ever keep in garage to stink it up; and backyard is too far.

On the side of the house but within a fence so no one can see them. I have no idea where my parents kept them growing up. Maybe in the garage or along the side of the house behind a fence?

Garage. Between snowstorms and windstorms I think they’d get blown away otherwise, plus animals would get into them (we had to keep ours locked in a special thing my dad made when I grew up without a garage because raccoons would take the lids off, and we’ve had animals chew through ours). I’ve never seen someone with a garage keep them outside actually.

I feel like keeping them in thr garage would make it stink in the garage. We keep them outside on the side

In our old neighborhood, the HOA banned cans from being beside the house, they had to be IN the garage. That was obnoxious. In this house, they are on the side of the garage in a spot designated for them (extra concrete laid at each house for trash cans).

Garage. Ours don't attract flies, but they do attract bears!

we live in the city and keep ours on our back patio. It's the very heavy duty kind and we store it inside one of those wood mini-sheds. We try to limit the garbage (food scraps etc.) that goes in it, using our disposal as much as possible. A lot of houses here have alleys through to the street but we don't so we have to roll the can through the house on trash day which I hate. Recycling lives in our basement.

If we had a garage they'd be in there.... but we don't, so they're on the side of our shed.

We have a carport next to the garage, so they're in there. They're only visible from the street if you're looking really hard (and we don't have an HOA anyway)
At my old house, we couldn't have them in view from the street. Which was annoying since it was townhouses. So on trash day, you had to go out to the backyard, and roll the cans around all the other houses to the end of the row of houses and back around to the front. But at least there everyone had the same trash days. With no HOA, we also have private trash collection so different companies come on different days so there's pretty much always someone with a can out front.

We used to keep them in our drive next to the garage but then hoa made us buy a shed for them. So they are still in the same spot just in a plastic shed thing
