GD moms! What have you been eating?

@snowjewelz: At my class they made everyone start with 5! You are at 1! So lucky! Hehe. I don't think I can squeeze enough blood out with 1.

Yup still without meds so far. Again I'm only at 20 weeks so I still have a long ways to go.

Did they put you on meds right away? I'm a little shocked to hear you are meds already.

  2. snowjewelz

    wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts

@Raindrop: No one ever told me what to do with my stuff haha. I read the instructions and so of course I set it to the lowest!

Yeah, I literally was charting for less than a week and I guess they saw that my fasting # is still above 90 so they were like, on meds you go! But it's only 1.25 mg. I might get upped to 2.5 mg! I don't really mind I guess...

  3. Raindrop

    grapefruit / 4731 posts

@snowjewelz: Wow no one told you how to use your stuff!? That's crazy. Well that's smart to set on the lowest and see if that works for you.

Yeah the oral meds is not bad and very easy to take... my OB said.

I'm worried about sticking myself with a needle. I'm just such a wimp. My friend that had GD and had to do the needle, she said the first few times are bad but you get use to sticking yourself with it. I guess we got use to pricking ourselves to check our blood.

@Raindrop: Yeah, I just went to the office, had no idea what to expect. She didn't even tell me much the first go around; most of everything I know I got it from HB still! She just wrote me prescriptions for the glucose stuff and then I figured out how to operate it on my own.

Yeah mine is just a small round pill and only $1.99 w/ insurance! I think I might have a problem if it was expensive.

What? What is your thing? Mine is technically a needle too; it goes into a thing and then I set how much comes up to poke me so that's why it's on 1 and it's more like a prick.

  5. Raindrop

    grapefruit / 4731 posts

@snowjewelz: I am using the one touch ultra 2 It comes with this black needle thing. You have to replace the needle... put the cap on... set the number (it's the blue dial on the bottom) then press the top with the hole to the side of your finger and then the blue button. In a millisecond the needle shoots up and pricks you. It's a little jarring at first but you get use to it. I'm still scared to press the blue button sometimes.

@Raindrop: That looks exactly like mine only not haha, mine is called Freestyle or something. Omg, I had an anxiety attack when I first started b/c I didn't know to expect!

  7. Raindrop

    grapefruit / 4731 posts

@snowjewelz: Oh you have the free style! At my class there was 15 of us... 14 of us had the ultra2 and one person had the free style, the teacher was like wow your insurance must be good because the free style is WAY better in how it works and less painful and more accurate.

  8. snowjewelz

    wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts

@Raindrop: Oh really? My doctor didn't say this one, she just wrote glucometer and I asked the pharmacy to find me the cheapest set possible That baggie I have is exactly the same as yours.

Ladies, I keep the individual alcohol pads in my little bag of goodies. I use one to wipe my finger clean before doing my blood. Then use the same one to wipe off the excess when I'm done. You can find them in the pharmacy typically near the diabetic supplies. They are usually just a couple of bucks for 100. So much easier than washing your hands each time.

I also typically use my pinky. My ring finger tends to bruise for some reason.

  10. snowjewelz

    wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts

@MamaG: I have them too but I *thought* I heard that I wasn't supposed to use it before in case the alcohol messes up the reading? I only use it to clean up after so far.

  11. Raindrop

    grapefruit / 4731 posts

@MamaG: Oh I have tried that! But for me for some reason it makes my blood streak... so instead of a nice dot of blood it's like a smear of blood. So annoying. Thanks for the tip though. I'm sure it will work for other people. I think it might have something to do with my the way my skin is.

  12. MamaG

    pomelo / 5298 posts

@Raindrop: I bet it's a little moisture left behind. What I will do at home is have a napkin and my alcohol wipe. First alcohol and then dry with the napkin. I figure the napkin can't be any worse than the towel in my bathroom. At my desk at work I use a Kleenex. Or in a pinch, I blow on my finger to make sure it's dry.

People's! So I'm so tempted to try this.

    http://lowcarblayla.blogspot.com/2012/04/how-to-order-low-carb-at-starbucks.html

I googled about this a ton after I read that link, and it seems like if I order decaf coffee w/ sugar free syrup w/ heavy whipping cream, there's should be less than 6g of carb and pretty much no sugar for a tall.

I just ate lunch and so desperate for nice sweet drink I was gonna go for a diet coke/coke zero but somehow came across this.

  14. Raindrop

    grapefruit / 4731 posts

@snowjewelz: Looks yummy! Let me know if it works for you.

Again I'm paranoid about having too much fake sugar but I do have some once in a while... just can't completely avoid them when you need a sweet fix.

  15. snowjewelz

    wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts

@Raindrop: Me too, I don't drink any diet soda's, but it's been sooo painful... The only favored things I have is green tea, decaf tea, flavored seltzer... I just want to try one to make sure it doesn't spike my #s, and then maybe I'll treat myself every other week or something. I think this is fueled by the whole world posting their pumpkin spice lattes on FB lol. I don't like those but I'd really start wanting a peppermint mocha

  16. MamaG

    pomelo / 5298 posts

Thankfully coffee's aren't my thing at all. I love a coke zero. For whatever reason I always go caffeine free during pregnancy so no cokes for me either

  17. Raindrop

    grapefruit / 4731 posts

@snowjewelz: I hear you!! It is super tough. If it helps you can probably drink a small amount. It's what I do. When I'm eating with DH, he normally gets a full sugar soda and I end up drinking maybe 4-6 gulps of it during my meal and it doesn't spike me. I'm like yes! I can have a little bit just not the whole thing.

Maybe share a Starbucks drink with your DH but have him drink like 80% of it?

  18. Raindrop

    grapefruit / 4731 posts

@MamaG: You are so strong!! Also very lucky that coffee isn't your thing. It's a super guilty pleasure of mine. Starbucks is so pricey that I use my credit card reward points for gift cards to feel like I'm not spending a ton of money on it... Seriously 5 bucks for a drink... that's crazy!! *But* oh so good.

  19. snowjewelz

    wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts

@Raindrop: Oo, that's a good idea! Just steal some gulps. I just feel so guilty! Or maybe I should just buy heavy whipping cream & sugar free syrup and make it at home so I can have a smaller cup than even a tall.

  20. MamaG

    pomelo / 5298 posts

My DH is the coffee drinker and fortunately he doesn't like Starbucks either. Now his Keurig and K-cup collection are another story

I did drink a caffeine free coke zero a couple of weeks ago and it took my edge off to get me through the rest of the pregnancy.

  21. Raindrop

    grapefruit / 4731 posts

@snowjewelz: No matter what I do at home... it just doesn't taste like Starbucks... I swear they sprinkle cr@ck in their drinks. Haha.

@MamaG: LOL. My mother in law has a quite a k-cup collection. It's very addicting to collect I heard.

  22. snowjewelz

    wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts

@MamaG: I don't like coffee that much either, I just like it with a lot of half & half and super sweet haha. I think I just crave sweet things in general. I was never a fan of diet soda's and I feel like I can satisfy my soda craving w/ seltzer anyway.

I think I will try to get this at Starbucks and if it works, I'll get my own stuff and make it at home to indulge a little here & there!

  23. snowjewelz

    wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts

@Raindrop: Hahaha! And seriously, I am not even a huge huge sweets person but I just want what I can't have now! It's all psychology!

  24. Raindrop

    grapefruit / 4731 posts

@snowjewelz: LOL DH knows when I'm pregnant when I want things I normally don't want. Like I don't drink normally but when I get pregnant suddenly I want a some alcohol. It's so weird. I can go years without having a sip and the moment I'm' pregnant even before I know, I just want a drink so badly.

Definitely want what you can't have!

  25. snowjewelz

    wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts

@Raindrop: Same here! I super rarely drink but since I had been pregnant I'm always like man, I want a beer, lol. What is wrong with us!! I'll def report back once I try this Starbucks thing.

  26. snowjewelz

    wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts

    @Raindrop: @MamaG:

So I did get that drink at Starbucks... The good news is nothing happened to my blood sugar. The bad news is, I prob didn't get the mix of syrup & heavy cream right so it didn't taste very good

  27. MamaG

    pomelo / 5298 posts

@snowjewelz: Bummer. Nothing like a drink tasting bad!

How have you ladies been doing? Last week was rough being out of town and trying to eat right, but I'm right back where I need to be now. I'm struggling to get my two daytime snacks in suddenly. I'm just so busy at work that I forget to take the time to eat.

  28. snowjewelz

    wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts

@MamaG: Yeah I skip snacks here & there too...

My weekend/week has been a disaster. We had a BBQ on Sat so I never tested at night b/c I literally was eating between 6 to 9 and I was tired so I didn't want to stay up just to test. Then Mon-Wed I was away at a conference. I brought stuff in the cooler to eat plus small portions of whatever they had, but my schedules were all off and during the day I couldn't get away to test. Oh well!

  29. Raindrop

    grapefruit / 4731 posts

@snowjewelz: Bummers!! Starbucks is usually pretty nice and will redo drinks for you if you ask.

@MamaG: Awww yeah I went on 3 vacations (already planned before I found out I had GD) and it was tough! My nurse said that she understands that it's okay. You can only try your best on vacation and there are more temptations than normal.

I eat half a protein bar for my snack and the other half for my other snack when I'm in a bind. If I'm not in a rush I usually pair it with cheese or whole nuts and sometimes fruit if I need a sugar fix.

I read the protein bar thing from one of mrs. wagon's post and it works, keeps me full. She also did protein shakes and I'm lazy to make my own and I can't find a pre-mix that is in my carb limit or can be broken down in my carb limit without having to be refrigerated.

I have pretty much bought out all the protein bars a the store, I'm lucky I was able to buy one at time to try them out. So far I really like luna bars and skinny girl bars, and I don't like the "think thin" bars they are basically mush with chocolate covering it.

Are you guys doing the protein bar approach?

  30. snowjewelz

    wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts

@Raindrop: I haven't done protein bars simply b/c I had been too lazy to look up ALL of them and figure out which one was best... So we can only eat 1/2 of it still at one time?

  31. MamaG

    pomelo / 5298 posts

I haven't done protein bars either. This afternoon I'm determined to eat the apple and peanut butter that has been on my desk all week.

My current favorite night time snack is a skinny cow salted caramel/pretzel ice cream bar. It's so yummy and is sort of taking away my strong desire for frozen custard and/or DQ Blizzard.

  32. Raindrop

    grapefruit / 4731 posts

Here are the nutrition facts of my 3 favorite protein bars right now. I have them at my desk.

I'm allowed 15-30 grams of sugar for snacks and I try to stay around 15ish grams.

Luna - Blueberry Bliss, it's like a granola bar with blueberry jam on top and blueberries embedded in it.

    Calories - 180
    Total Fat - 5g
    Total Carbs - 27g
    Protein - 8g

Luna - S'mores, it's like a granola bar made of gram crackers with the bottom dipped in chocolate.

    Calories - 180
    Total Fat - 5g
    Total Carbs - 27g
    Protein - 9g

Skinnygirl - Banana Oatmeal Dark Chocolate - it's a granola bar with bits of banana and chocolate in it - this taste like a banana dipped in chocolate frozen treat but not frozen.

    Calories - 150
    Total Fat - 5g
    Total Carbs - 22g
    Protein - 7g

Yeah it's hard these still have quite a bit a sugar in each but eating half definitely ties me over for an 1-2 hours till my next snack. I'm on a higher snack count than you guys though.

@MamaG: That sounds super yummy! I'll going to get some for my night time snack too. Thanks for the recommendation.

  33. Raindrop

    grapefruit / 4731 posts

Oh I should mention I'm also allergic to peanuts so this GREATLY limits what protein bars I can have.

  34. snowjewelz

    wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts

@MamaG: I must get it! I haven't had ANY ice cream or frozen treats cause I just get discouraged that even the low carb/no sugar added icecream I can only have 1/2 cup which is like, a few bites...

  35. snowjewelz

    wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts

@Raindrop: Oo, I can prob eat a whole of that skinny girl one! I am supposed to stay around 15g for snacks too, but I find that as long as my lunch is good, by the time I test 2 hours after lunch, the snack doesn't really matter

  36. snowjewelz

    wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts

@MamaG: Btw, the 13g of sugar is okay? I just looked up the nutrition info.

I'm pretty sneaky now w/ my night time snack anyway, since I'm on meds I feel like I have somewhat of a "pass" haha..

  37. MamaG

    pomelo / 5298 posts

@snowjewelz: Honestly, I never look at the sugar (though I probably should). I look at the carbs only. And this is 18g, which is also over the 15g I'm supposed to be targeting, but it hasn't been a problem for me.

I'm not going to lie the other night it was so good that I had two (shame!) and I was still fine in the morning.

  38. snowjewelz

    wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts

@MamaG: I have been avoiding sugar, I actually never ask how much sugar I'm allowed to have! I might as well give it a try!

  39. Raindrop

    grapefruit / 4731 posts

Hm.. I always thought sugar was just a type of carb... is that not true?

I guess I just treat sugar as a carb

  40. MamaG

    pomelo / 5298 posts

Agreed sugar is just a type of carb. I focus on the carb number and try not to worry about it otherwise. Same with calories, I don't pay any attention to those either.
