My friend is going through this with her son who is now 3 months. Her first little one had no problems so it was kinda a surprise that baby number two spit up so much. He will eat 4-6 ounces and it seems almost spits up half of that. They have him on some gas drops and keep him elevated but don't seem to notice a difference. She has even tried breastmilk and formula. As long as he was gaining weight though the dr wasn't concerned.

It could be a couple of reasons - acid reflux or perhaps even allergies. Sometimes my 6-month-old will spit up a little bit if I don't burp him. But it was nothing like my oldest when he was a baby. He would constantly spit up and it turned out to be dairy and soy protein allergies. It got better as he got older. The first few months was pretty bad. I want to say a couple of times it was projectile spit up. Yikes! Hope it's just reflux and not allergies. Having to deal with allergies kind of sucked. Hope she feels better soon!

I've got a spitter too. A happy spitter, so likely not acid reflux.

Everyone says some just spit up a lot and it's not a big deal as long as they keep gaining weight.

FYI, I did find that by feeding him more often (less amount available in the boob) his spitting up got a little better. But he still spits up a lot, it's just not enough to drench MY outfits.

I knew it was reflux because she was really fussy during and after feedings. She also spit up tons (sometimes I wondered if any milk actually stayed in her tummy) and was generally really cranky around feeding time

My son had reflux and I knew it was reflux because it smelled sour and he always fussed afterwards and looked uncomfortable. If he was a happy spitter, it wouldn't have bothered me so much. But he always looked uncomfortable so I took him to the ped who said it was reflux.

I'm dealing with the same thing with my 3 week old son. I'm not sure if I would consider him a happy spitter. He's always eager to eat, but he fusses for a while after eating if I put him in his crib.
@Ree723: My son spits up long after eating too! Just when I think he doesn't have anymore... ten minutes later, more comes out. I can't hold him forever. Laundry problem... sigh.
For those who have dealt with a milk allergy, how long did it take you to figure it out? I've heard that dairy can stay in your system for up to two weeks. I'm considering pumping so we can really see what he's getting in and how fast, and so we can burp him more frequently/consistently (if that makes any sense).

My pediatrician told me that even with no acid reflux, babies can spit up a lot. We put M on acid reflux medicine and she still spits up tons and tons. It doesn't help the spit up but it does help her pain of the acid reflux. We were told at her 4 month appt that once we start adding solids in, the spitting will slow down.

@musicav - i just suspected she had a dairy sensitivity because i eat a ton of dairy and she just seemed really gassy.. My sister also told me to try cutting dairy since she noticed a huge difference when she did it for her son. I noticed a difference in about 3 days. At first i was skeptical and thought it was just a coincidence.. Or maybe i was in denial because i love dairy! But about two weeks later, i had a cheeseburger and totally forgot that im not supposed to eat cheese and noticed that night that she was grunting a lot again and spit up more than usual. Some babies get over their dairy sensitivity at 6 months so i will def try having some dairy at that point!

I called the ped this morning and just got a call back. He said to start by eliminating artificial sweeteners, caffeine, and dairy. So... no chocolate for me, and DH will have to eat the fresh pizza and drink the gallon of milk I just bought.
