Has anyone used gentian violet to treat thrush? DD is 18 days old and I have these huge crevices at the sides of my nipples where they meet the areola that won't heal. The IBCLC recommended I try gentian violet for 3 days because it looks and sounds like thrush. I have to admit I'm a bit skeptical...any experiences?

No personal experience but I've had friends use it and it worked. Be prepared though, it will turn your nipples purple and anything that touches them.

@gotkimchi: Did it work to treat you and your LO? DD doesn't have white patches in her mouth but the LC said the gentian violet on my nipples would treat her mouth just in case.

I used grapefruit seed extract and it worked perfectly. I took 250mg 3x/day and swabbed my nipples with the liquid version diluted with water after every feeding. I also got a rx for newmans all purpose nipple ointment (APNO) which helped a lot too. Good luck. Thrush is awful.

@IRunForFun: actually I'm a pharmacist and I recommend it quite a bit. I actually like it better then some of the rx products.
