DD has been pooping and peeing on the potty more lately (albeit only at daycare). We should potty train her at home soon, but I'm dreading it because we have carpet everywhere. What's the best way to clean up her accidents? Should I buy the stuff that people use for pet stains?

@Andrea: We give Charlie a lot of positive feedback every time he poops on the potty... praise, stickers, treats, you name it! Now he never misses a chance to poop... he still wears a diaper during naptime and if he hasn't fallen asleep yet he will take it off to use the potty, which amazes me.
So maybe it's not necessary to take the diaper off completely? Or alternatively, is there a room in the house without carpet?

@mrbee: Ok, it seems like so many people take the diaper off completely when potty training so I was considering that. We have no carpet in the kitchen but I think we'll go crazy if we spend 5 days straight in our kitchen!

@Andrea: yah but your DD is already potty trained at daycare? So, may not be necessary to do the three day diaper less approach...

@mrbee: no, not fully trained at all. but she does almost 100% of her peeing/pooping on the potty at daycare. She doesn't go potty very much at home.

@Andrea: Do you know what cues they use to get her going on the potty so consistently? Continuity between home and daycare potty training could be really helpful!
One thing I heard is to make sure your LO is sitting on the potty at regular intervals. Also, 5-10 minutes after eating (or sometimes, even in the middle of a meal!). That stuff really really helps, I think.

You can always get Nature's Miracles for pets as it cleans and eliminates odor. I use it for my dog and have used it once when my son accidentally peed on the carpet. Just make sure you soak it well to get rid of pee stains and let it soak for a the recommended time on the bottle.
Hopefully you can avoid most accidents with positive re-enforcement like Mr. Bee recommended. I bought a timer and took my son every 20-25 minutes to the potty and rewarded him with stickers when he did pee. He loved it and stuck all the stickers on his shirt to show his daddy when he got home from work. Poo was a different story for us...he got one big marshmallow and one big sticker for poop. More incentive. He is more or less potty trained except for night time. I still put on a pull-up for nap time though just in case. Sometimes he pees after he wakes up but not while sleeping.

@Andrea: when we trained DD we bought a pet stain spray but only had to use it once for a night time accident . Day care had been working with her to pee on the potty. One weekend we said to her , no more diapeys. We put the training pants on her and took her to the potty every 30 min after a drink or every hour otherwise. We also stuck around home that weekend.She got it really fast especially since she had already been doing it a day care. Oh also she got 5 mini m&m's for every pee.

@mrbee: I think it's just a matter of putting the time towards it. During the week, we have to rush her out the door in the mornings to get to work and then at night it's another mad dash for bedtime. And then on the weekends, we are rarely at home so we're just not dedicating very much time to it.
@erwoo: @T-Mom: Wow, ok, so both of you didn't have the big clean up mess that I am envisioning. I hope DD will do pretty well since she's been going at daycare already. That's great. I am feeling encouraged. Thanks ladies!

@Andrea: if she's ready maybe you can do it over thanksgiving? Or any other long weekend... I was the same way about trying to find the time to do it. But It's important to capitalize on the opportunity when they are interested since sometimes they regress and refuse later, from what I have heard...

@Andrea: You can try Nature's Miracle, or depending on what kind of carpet/furniture we're talking about (some fabrics and rugs require certain kinds of cleaners) you might want to try a foaming cleaner. I bought Woolite Oxy Deep Power Shot to save a nice rug once when Nature's Miracle didn't take out a stain and my default cleaner was too harsh.

@Mrs. Superhero: I have a mattress cover on DD's bed but I should probably do this on my own mattress! We don't have a cover and there are some stains on ours....from sweat, not pee!
@T-Mom: yes, we'll only have 3.5 days during Thanksgiving, but our current plan is to try it then!

Another vote for pet stain cleaner!! We've fostered some dogs in the past and have dealt with SOOOO many accidents, both #1 & # 2. ugh, it was seriously gross
