That's tough; could you treat him to a meal while you're there? I would def leave the place in tip top shape when you leave; and leave an excellent review... And send him a thank you card detailing how his generous offer made your trip so memorable.

I'm not sure where you live but if you have trader Joe's they usually have a wide array of nice wine and are super helpful if you ask. Most of their bottles look fancy and taste great too if you want to go the wine route

@Mrs. Blue: Maybe ask for his recommendation, then invite him, then make sure you get the bill? I know money isn't the issue here, it's probably more the gesture! And I feel like sending him a heartfelt thank you card after will be a nice follow up too!

Whenever I'm in doubt for a gift, I love to give Murray's Cheese! They have an array of price ranges and it's great for using to host, even if the host maybe isn't a cheese fan.

I never gift wine, I much prefer to gift liquors. St. Germaine is nice, as is Lillet.

@looch: Interesting about never gifting wine. Can you please share why not?

@agold: One bottle never feels right. If you are gifting a single person, will they finish it before it turns? If you gift a bottle of wine to a couple, it's not enough for two full glasses each. They can't serve it to others because there is only one bottle and not enough for 4 full glasses. Last time we moved, we had several bottles of red wine that we had received as gifts and we had to give away, largely because I don't drink red wine.

There's a lot less guessing with using up a bottle of liquor. It serves more and has a longer shelf life when opened.

Do you know if he has a particular cocktail he likes? I recently got my friend a nice glass jug from the Oxfam shop, two matching tumblers, a bottle of fancy gin (around $80 - so pretty upscale) and a four pack of fancy tonic water. All together it only added up to about $150 and she's raved to me about it over and over. As a plus if you can find a nice decorative jug or decanter he could use it to decorate the AirBnB.

I'd opt for a small local gift. Maybe from a small farm that makes it's own marmalade or handmade chocolates from a local confectionery shop. If all else fails, alcohol works

I should add that I don't think your gift has to be expensive. But something difficult to acquire in his location would be a nice touch.
