We are going to a one year old's birthday in a few weeks. The parents are close friends. They said he doesn't need anything, and I know they already feel overrun with books and toys as they live in an apartment! As a parent, what would you say is the best gift for a one year old--should I get an amazon gift card and a small toy? I want to bring something, but something that will be useful and not clutter! Thanks for any ideas.

We've only been to one 1 year old party so far, but we bought her 18 month clothing and an activity book with crayons meant for younger toddlers (12 months+). I wanted to buy a crafty project instead of another toy. The parents appreciated the clothes so I was glad we bought what we did.

We gave our Godson's money for their savings accounts for their first birthday's, they are more than set with clothes, books, toys, etc so we wanted something that would make a difference someday. Plus, they didn't know they were getting the shaft

I think a gift card would be nice. Maybe a cd, my LO loves music, and CD's don't take up much space.

Or a gift card for the family to have a meal out? I always appreciate things to use like nice bath products for baby or the craft idea is good too!!

When DD turned one we had enough toys, and she didn't really play with toys, so I asked for clothes. I think clothes or a gift card to a clothing store, is a good idea. It is something they are going to need, and isn't going to create too much clutter.

Do they have a 529 plan set up for LO? You can usually make a contribution towards that.

Maybe a gift card for an indoor play gym. I was going to say if you don't like the couple, you can get those annoying corn popper toys. Admittedly, that's my MO with 1st birthday parties.

We got my niece a toy called the "Fridge Farm"...It's magnetic and sticks to the fridge, and has magnetic animals so when you put them onto the fridge farm, it sings and makes animal noises...We also coupled it with a gift card....The fridge farm doesn't take up space, and she loves it.

We got a 1 year old girl a little tote bag with some books. Her 2nd birthday is coming up next month so we're brainstorming for that.
Like @CascaseMom said - gift cards are good. My friend (the above mom) asked for those for Christmas - gift cards to the local kids gym, for example.
