My friend's husband earned his doctorate and they are throwing a party to celebrate. Do you have any ideas as to what to bring as a gift? They have a 4 year old and 4 month old and the party is a BBQ. I am not sure if I should bring alcohol, food, or something else that says congratulations.

I also got tons of alcohol - we still have most of it, 5 years later! But my favorite gifts were gift certificates to go out for dinner or a movie (not a lot of leisure time when you're writing your dissertation).

I got mostly alcohol - champagne or wine. You could also get a nice bottle of scotch or bourbon if you know he likes it, or maybe a bottle + a set of glasses?

Craft beer! Or restaurant gift card. Those were my favorites when I (finally) graduated.

I have a PhD - love the idea of bringing champagne, but that's also because I love champagne. If it were for my husband, scotch would have been an ideal thought.

If you want a more tangible gift (rather than a gift card type thing), for academic achievements I always like nice, personalized pens (you can get Cross ones from $25 up) or business card holders, depending on what might be most appropriate for the person's next career move.

I find all these alcohol ideas funny because I was pregnant when I defended - I guess I really missed out on the liquor cabinet stock-up
I know it's stupid but amazon gift cards (or target) were awesome. Some people included a silly gift related to the thesis project (ie my thesis was on retinoic acid role in zebrafish development so I got fish related things and one guy attached carrots LOL).A diploma frame would be great if you are especially close, it's ok to have duplicates because they'll eventually hang their undergrad, masters, and PhD along with any relevant certification

No ideas for the graduate, but my in-laws got me flowers when my husband got his PhD because it's not easy being an grad student spouse :).

DH got his PhD last year and we don't drink. He only got gifts from parents so nothing would have been expected from friends! Bringing a tasty dessert or something else to eat would be plenty. If you feel obligated to do a gift then I think a restaurant gift card to do a celebratory meal would be above and beyond. DH would have even just liked a card to 7-11 so he could buy his slushies! Haha. He's low maintenance.
