If you had a family gift exchange and you guys set the limit at $50 and someone bought their goftee a present for $120, how would you feel?

Maybe they found it on sale? I wouldn't worry about it, they knew the rules.

I would think maybe they got it on sale but it was a little weird.

I'd be annoyed. There's a reason there is a limit. However, are you sure they paid that much? Maybe they re gifted or found an amazing sale...

Maybe it was a Black Friday find, is that possible? I usually try to get the best bang for my buck in exchanges by seeking out deals.
edit: that being said, I wouldn't gift that crazy of a deal, because it would make people uncomfortable and seems flashy.

Maybe a sale or regift? I wouldn't worry about it!

@blackbird: I am with you on this one. Plus not fair to the others that just get the $50 gifts.

I'd be annoyed if they actually spent that much. Follow the rules, people.

I'd be annoyed. There is usually a limit for a reason and it makes it unfair to everyone else.

I feel like it's ok to go a bit over the limit - ex. $50. limit and you go to like $70- but more than double... Too much!

I would feel awkward and embarassed because I stuck to the limit and the person I gifted will receive "only" a $50 gift.
honeydew / 7504 posts
Even if they got it on sale, it's still "worth" $120, so it still seems like a flashier gift than the other actual $50 gifts. I'd be annoyed.

I don't think it matters.
Unless they are bragging about it Michael Scott style. Then I would be annoyed

@cheert16: I agree! A little over the limit is understandable. But a little over the limit would be like $5-10 over!

If I were the recipient of the expensive gift, I'd feel awkward getting something so much more than I spent. If someone else got the expensive gift, eh, it wouldn't bother me. Gift exchanges are always luck of the draw (literally, haha). Even without anyone exceeding the limit, sometimes you get something great, other times...not so much. I wouldn't really bother giving it much thought.

@Mrs. Lion: this was my thought exactly- Michael Scott nailed the inappropriate gift giving.
It would bother me, unless it was very clear that it was a sale item.

@simplyfelicity: agree!
We have a $25 limit on the secret Santa for our friend group. I got an amazing deal on a Sons of Anarchy sweatshirt for my recipient last year. The sweatshirt retails for $60, but I only paid like $23 with shipping! I got a great deal and my friend got a great gift!

It could have been on sale, regifted or just something that the gift giver thought would be perfect for the recipient, regardless of cost. I would happily accept it and not overthink the situation.

@simplyfelicity: @hotchildinthecity: Same! I'd be appreciative of the generosity.

I would assume sale as well. I have done that pleanty - I love getting as much gift as I can for my buck'

@Mrs. Lion: @Mrs. Oatmeal: I'm roaring with laughter because 1. Great office reference. 2. That is my DHs name and he is the worst at keeping to gift limits.
I wouldn't be too upset. I've scored some super awesome gifts with point or leftover gift cards so it seems way more generous than it is.

Thabks everyone who answered. For the record I wasn't involved this time haha. A family member gave someone else a gift way over the limit and some of the other family members who were not the recipient threw a fit. Yikes!
