I lost my favorite apple pie recipe and I need a new one! Preferably one that uses granny smith (couldn't find Macintosh), and with a crumb/streusel topping. I'd love your tried and true apple pie recipes. Thanks!

@abbydabbydoodlebug: we make this every year and get nothing but rave reviews. We use refrigerated pie crust (sacrelige, I know!) and a big thing is to slice all the apples the same size and thickness.

Tuning in to give my mom some pointers. Hernpies are always so tart and her top crust comes out inflated like a dome.

@mrs. wagon: @jaypegs: Mine too, it's amazing! The only real change I make is to mix the syrup in with the apples (saving a bit to glaze the crust with) and add a little bit of cinnamon/nutmeg/vanilla/lemon juice to the syrup as it cooks.

I loooove me an apple pie with crumb topping. I use refrigerated deep dish crust from the store ( I know, I know) and use a mix of granny smith & macintosh apples sliced small with some sugar and cinnamon mixed in. The topping is 6 tablespoons of cold butter, 3/4 cup (I think, don't have the recipe with me) of flour, 1-2 tbs of cinnamon and 1/2 cup sugar for the topping!

@mrs. wagon: Thank you so much!! Glad to hear multiple bees love this recipe. I might forego my crumb topping for the lattice this year with that glaze. Looks yummy!

@petunia354: Thanks! I love me some crumb topping too. I also use the refrigerated dough. My pie crust never turns out good, so I gave up years ago when the pillsbury kind came out! Never looked back.

@jaypegs: @lovehoneybee: haha nice!! Wagon Sr. actually found the recipe in college and it was the ONE. THING. he was able to make in the kitchen until we had kids!
Two more tips about the recipe: mound the apples VERY high because they will deflate while cooking! And while I'm sure everyone wants fresh pie out of the oven on Thanksgiving day, this pie is AMAZING the next day, after the apples really soak up the sauce and it all gets a little mushy. Omg.
@abbydabbydoodlebug: @petunia354: Wagon Sr. used to make his own crust with lard and everything, chilling it in the fridge for 3 hours, etc. until he ran out of time one year and bought a crust mix (jiffy). It was so easy AND tasted the same or better, he couldn't believe it and he never looked back. Then I introduced him to the ready made crusts from the store and omg! We get so many compliments on the crust!!

@abbydabbydoodlebug: @petunia354: @mrs. wagon: I have a great recipe for homemade pie crust which is ridiculously easy, because it uses oil rather than anything temperamental. Just mix it all in a bowl (or even directly in the pie pan!) and pat it out.
1.5 cups flour
2t sugar
.5t salt
2T milk
.5 cup oil
Not pressuring, but it's sooooo easy and sooooo good!

@mrs. wagon: omg, I sent this recipe to my mom and she made it this year. Sooo good. There wasn't any left.

@mrs. wagon: @jaypegs: @lovehoneybee: I love this recipe too, but what's the secret to making it not quite as soupy? Maybe I didn't let it cool long enough? I used Granny Smith apples.

This apple pie was a huge hit! I added vanilla and cinnamon to the caramel sauce and tossed it with the apples before putting it in the crust. I actually made an crumb topping with oats that was super tasty. Baked it for about 50 min on 350. Turned out amazing! I cooled it on a rack and let it sit overnight until today and reheated it some in the oven before serving. I made homemade whipped cream with maple syrup and cinnamon. It was a lot of people's favorite! Everyone agreed that it probably would've been even better with Macintosh apples instead of Granny Smith. Hopefully I can find some next year.

@Espion: we always make the pies the night before! That way the sauce soaks into the apples and crust.
@abbydabbydoodlebug: we have tried it with lots of different kinds of apples (and mixes of apples). So far our favorite is Cortland. We did granny smiths last night and it didn't compare!

@mrs. wagon: I've never seen Cortland apples down here, but I have seen Macintosh ones occasionally which is what I always used growing up. Granny smiths just aren't the same!
