Now that you are a mama is there anything that you will be sure to no longer give as a baby gift? For me it's receiving blankets... even if they are on the registry! We had to cancel my shower at home because I wasn't allowed to fly, and my local shower is this week. But despite the fact that I have not yet had a baby shower I still have an entire drawer full of blankets!! I'm sure we will use them all, but here's hoping I don't get TOO many more!

Those stocking caps, my son had tons and I maybe used 1? I also had a ton of receiving blankets, no idea where I put them all, but we're down to 2!

Newborn clothes...we have a ton of random short sleeves onesies that baby will probably not be able to wear because he'll either be too big or it will be too cold.

Really? We got so few gifts, I love them ALL. We did get 5 toys and really don't need them yet but I am sure they will become useful as LO gets older. We love our gifts!
@hilsy85: Layer! My LO hates wearing sleeves unless I can put them on stealth-like--so it;s short sleeves and hoodies for him! 
You may use those onesies yet. Maybe.

Clothes, especially in NB or 0-3. I have SO much in those sizes she NEVER wore yet I'm buying clothes for her in 3-6 and up.

I will not buy clothing anymore, except for white onesies! I know it is fun to buy that stuff, but I also know that most parents need the "important" stuff more.

We have several fleece blankets and tons of clothes. (Neither of which we registered for) But, overall, I think we lucked out in getting a lot of registry items.

I was telling DH the other day that I won't ever give clothes again unless I give them along with something else that the parents need that is on the registry. LO has soooooooooo many clothes.

@pastemoo: We totally appreciate all of our gifts and are so thankful that people have been so generous. I'm just saying now that I know what a popular gift receiving blankets are I'll pick something else to give my mama friends.
If we have a boy I might be coming after those hoodies looking for a trade : )

I probably won't give clothes. We got so many clothes (as you guys have seen in the pictures I've posted!), and while I totally appreciate the generosity, part of me wants to be able to buy some cute outfits myself 
I can't bring myself to spend money on more clothes, though, because she doesn't need anymore.

I don't give clothing either....we didn't have a shower but still got tons of gifts of clothing. I think it was because we live abroad and it had to go in a suitcase to get here, but it was ridiculous, like Carters and Baby Gap exploded all over our apartment.

So far we haven't received too much clothing. I think that's one of the benefits of being Team Green, people don't get as excited about buying clothes when they have to be gender neutral. I sometimes buy clothes for friends but always 6 months and up.

@MamaMoose: They are some CUTE hoodies. Just let me know. I would love another muslin blanket. We bought 7 receiving blankets (and LO is a major spitter so they are constantly dirty) and 3 muslin swaddling blankets. We did get 3 hand made blankets (2 knit, 1 crochet) and I was worried it was too many and they were so beautiful to not use... well we use them all the time! Tummy time with knit textures. Fun!
I still give clothes-- but 9 month or bigger. It's kind of hilarious--my SIL got ZERO NB clothes because all her friends with kids got so many NB clothes. So... she bought us a set of NB clothes. He fit them for 2 weeks. But it was the only thing that properly fit him at that time so it was pretty cool to have.

Wow, that's a lot of blankets!! I'm not pregnant yet, but I've known for a while that it's a huge no-no to give clothes at a baby shower. Usually the older women will all bring clothes so I feel like us younger women should actually buy something from the registry.

We have a ton of quilts.
Sawyer got 6 quilts and another 6 crocheted/knitted blankets. He was born in April, and he is a hot baby, so the blankets mostly get used for naked time (I let him roll around naked on the floor). I could use towels as well, but I might as well at least try to use the blankets (though I am not sure how impressed people would be to know their handmade gifts are being purposefully peed and poo'ed on).
I didn't register for any blankets, period.

When I was younger I would always buy blankets, cute clothes, and the Boppy. Probably for the last 4-5 years, I've come to realize parents need more of the practical stuff, so I usually buy off the registry or give a GC to their store. Definitely not as fun or cute, but sometimes I'll add a cute little something for the "aww factor".

Not a mom yet, but I know enough of them to always buy useful things from the registry, with a gift receipt. But sometimes I throw in a cute practical outfit like a one piece zip up sleeper, so something is cute

Blankets and hooded bath towels. I registered for 2 packs of the A&A blankets, which I love, and then also registered for 3 warmer blankets. People ended up buying all of those for us, plus we have an additional 3 other handknit blankets. Definitely didn't need that many.
We also ended up with 10 hooded bath towels! I wish I returned some as we really only need like 3 or 4.

@MsMini: I got 2 quilts from neighbors and a friend of MIL. they are beautifully crocheted but they are either a hideous color or HOT pink. Neither of which I'm a fan of. And they are both of a itchy yarn not something soft for babies. I don't think I will be using them....

I will either buy some necessities off the registry or just give cash or gift card. I really appreciated all the cash and gift cards I got from my work shower. I was able to buy our car seat, stroller and packnplay with it, and still have some left over for some of the necessities I didn't get.

I think before having a baby I was more likely to buy only from the registry because I didn't want to get something stupid or wrong, but now that I have a lo I do go off registry because I like to get things that she likes or that we found useful.

Whoa...that's a lot of receiving blankets. I have quite a few b/c I thought I might need them but I hardly ever use them, especially when I discovered the Swaddle Me and Miracle Blankets. I mostly use them to put on the carpet for my LO to hang out on but now he's getting so big he kind of shuffles off of it or grabs it to eat it. I'm tempted to make a light blanket out of them. Just just have to see who can do it for me b/c I don't sew.
As for what gifts, it would be those soft fleece blankets. I got a ton of those. Some I was able to return, some I had to give away.

I agree that too many love to give blankets. I also received a ridiculous amount of wash cloths. Now that I have a LO I'm all about buying the registry items or higher quality keepsake type items like a custom block set from Etsy or other hand crafted toys. Oh and books as add ons. They're all just things we didn't get a lot of and would have really appreciated as well.
ETA: Your drawer puts my LOs linen drawer to shame. I think I need to go practice my organization skills.

@MamaMoose: Actually... We use those blankets at sheets now (we only bought 2 sheets). They work GREAT. Just in case you want to use all those many many blankets.

Piggy banks. We got 5 piggy banks when I had my son. So funny. The best was that every person who got us one was like "I get piggy banks for babies, it's MY thing!"... um, you and four other people I know. I have kind of strewn them all over the house and then one is still in the box. I figure if we have another kid we can use 1-2 for that kid and it will all work out. Whatever!
