...and I have no idea what to expect. We are meeting with the mortgage lender that works hand in hand with our realtor (which happens to be my uncle), so I trust this guy, but I have no idea what we are supposed to ask. We have some things we are supposed to bring, but since I have never done this before, I'd like to go to the meeting prepared. What kinds of things should we make sure we ask about?

It was easy when we went - I made sure to have all the documents they wanted paperclipped and labeled so it was easy to copy. I just asked for an overview of the process and said what amount we were looking to get approved for. We didn't want to know how much we could max out at - no temptation

I would go n with and idea of what you can afford for a monthly mortgage payment as opposed to letting them tell you what you can have. They often give you more than you can afford.

@prettylizy:'s advice is the best one yet. You need to figure out what you can afford vs what they offer you because they generally approve you more than you can afford so I'd be careful with that. Just keep in mind that inflation occurs so plan on adding $100-$200 to your mortgage each year for increase in taxes. Good luck tomorrow!!
