and i've heard great things about 'heading home with your newborn', but i haven't read it yet. i just looked it up for the amazon link & it has 4.5 stars on 206 reviews, so it must be pretty helpful to a lot of people =)

i second Happiest Baby on the Block. we have the book and DVD. If you can borrow the DVD from the library do that instead of purchasing.

As an educational psych major and teacher, I think "Brain Rules for Baby" is the most solidly research-based yet accessible book I've come across. There is no pop psych in this book - it's all very grounded. I highly, highly recommend it.
