It wasn't a complete surprise, since our agency isn't doing so well, and I was the most recent hire. I was surprise at how upset I was though--I guess no one likes being rejected (even though I know it's not personal). Anyone else get laid off during pregnancy? At least now I'll have the summer to get baby stuff done and make sure I'm staying active and eating well!

Our plan was actually for me to become a SAHM after LO comes, or to go back to work part time. So I'll probably be at home for at least 6 months, and then maybe look for something part time. Unless I'm going stir crazy, in which case maybe I'll start looking sooner!

Aw bummer, I'm sorry. But you were planning on being a SAHM right? So now you'll just get a jump start. And you don't have to stress about taking time off for the vacation you were planning. Try to focus on the positives... and know that it was not a personal issue but a financial one for the agency!

You seem to be positive about it tho!! I was laid off six months before getting pregnant, it's what sparked conversations to have a baby
I got rehired later so it all worked out!!

@hilsy85: awww that sucks... I do know how you feel... when the recession hit in 2008 I was in the first round of layoffs. I still feel so embarrassed when I think about how much I cried while saying goodbye to my coworkers. Ugh. So unprofessional! But I was super sad, especially because I had been trying to work with HR to advance my career with the company... they had been so unresponsive... I should have taken it as a sign! But I was trying to safeguard myself from exactly what happened... I knew my role was pretty disposable for my department and I wanted to move into a different role. Unfortunately they kept me where I was so that it would be easier to get rid of me
Anyway, you're doing a great job looking at the bright side of things. I ended up deciding to start a family, worked part time while pregnant, and was a SAHM for 18 months before finally going back to work. The timing worked out great... ESPECIALLY because I got a horrible severance package so I received AMAZING unemployment checks every week... for more than 2 years!!! So call your unemployment office as soon as you get your severance package... start getting those checks!!!

I technically got one week of severance and the unemployment agent on the phone said it was the worst severance she'd ever heard of. Not sure if it's the same in every state, but in my state you can only call on a certain day (according to the first letter of your last name) and the wait times are LONG so put aside a big chunk of time to be on hold!!

I'm sorry to hear that! I was laid off about a year and a half ago... It sucked, but it sounds like it won't be as bad for you since you were planning on staying home anyways!

I'm 17 weeks pregnant and my job is NOT secure right now do to the company's financial issues too...we're going to start spending money like I might not have a job in 2 weeks. It's really stressful, but there isn't anything I can do about it right now..

Layoffs suck no matter what your plans are, that's for sure. I didn't get laid off before or during pregnancy or maternity leave (protected status) but I am convinced I would have been laid off upon my return to work, which happened exactly 3 months later to a new mom coworker. If I'd only been patient I could have gotten an awesome severance package and unemployment BUT I would have had to have a spot in daycare for my son.
Have a great summer and enjoy your new status, I like to call it "retired."

That is such a bummer
But if I were you, and planning on being a SAHM, I'd be relieved that at least I would get unemployment while I was staying at home, as opposed to quitting my job! There is always a silver lining -

I looked for a job for about two weeks straight, I had interviews and everything but when you are 33 weeks pregnant...people don't want to hire you knowing you will be gone shortly. I finally gave up at the end of last week and decided to stay home until baby comes. I was very stressed financially but we figured things out and it will be tight but we can do it for a while. I will need to find something after the baby is born though, can't afford not to This time at home has not been very fun for me though, I feel like it's a waste and I just wish my baby was here now!I wish you the best

I was actually surprised to be offered an awesome temporary position after only a few weeks on unemployment - in my desired field, more $ than my previous job, and totally flexible with the pregnancy. Ended up working out really well for me professionally, and I have some great contacts for whenever I decide to go back to work.
