We live in interesting times. If everyone would call or write their conservative house member asking for a clean bill, maybe we could apply enough pressure to make a difference.
Also people could write to John Boehner and ask him to drop the Hastert rule in this case because their are enough votes in the house to pass the bill already, but he won't bring it up because he doesn't have the majority of the majority. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hastert_Rule

DH read about the shut-down news a few days ago and thought it was super important, but on a global scale. He went on and on about how US bonds were more secure than gold because the US always paid off their debts (in this case the interest). If certain things were triggered this mid Oct and the US stops paying their debts to foreign countries (that have pretty much depended on that money), it could send a horrible domino effect.
It's interesting how all of this is going to play out, nationally and internationally.

@SugarplumsMom: just the talk of us not paying our debt a few years ago triggered a drop in the US credit rating. What we do and how late we come around to doing these things impact us.
