Just checking in on everyone... is your semester over?
I just submitted my final exam for the semester and have about 5 weeks off until summer classes start! Wahoo!
I saw @Medianaranja graduated today on another thread. Congrats lady!
@Maybebaby Isn't your graduation soon? Not to mention something else kind of important!? How are you holding up?
How are things on your end @lovelyplum?

Hooray for the end of the semester!
I have my dissertation prospectus defense in about a month, but I'm feeling strangely liberated right about now after a horribly busy semester! In the past month alone, I passed my oral exams and gave a lecture in the course I'm TAing, in addition to normal teaching/grading workload (no classes this year, thank goodness!) my students' final is on the 15th so I'll have grading to do after then, but right now I'm sitting pretty for a minute

Thanks for checking in! I've been thinking about you ladies and meaning to post here....but you know how it goes.
End of the semester has been a zoo. I'm so. glad. this stupid semester is over. Seriously, one of the hardest ever, for reasons that aren't quite clear. I was up most of the night Tuesday finishing a (less than stellar but now complete) research paper and then spent forever grading papers. My students already had their final, but I'm ignoring them until at least Tuesday, at which point I'll be done with my two other papers. Praise be! After this semester, I only have four classes left. It's a little scary to think that at this time next year, I'll be reading for exams. To be honest, though, I'm a little bit looking forward to that. I think I'll enjoy it more than coursework.
@mrs. 64: enjoy these 5 weeks! Any plans? I can't remember-where are you in terms of coursework, etc?
@nana87: congrats, lady! That sounds like an insane semester. Four of my classmates just passed orals and are now in your shoes. I'm not there yet, but I did have to give two lectures in my TA class, along with a lot more grading/planning than I've had in a while. I'm super relieved to be done. Good luck prepping for the defense. How are you feeling about it?
@Medianaranja: Congrats, lady!
@googly-eyes: you start Monday, right? Good luck!

@LovelyPlum: daaang, 2 lectures on top of classes sounds like a lot! I'm feeling pretty decent about the defense, I've already written grant proposals on my research plans and gotten feedback from 2/4 of my committee members, so I know the idea is solid and it just needs to be fleshed out a bit more. it's funny, the prospectus is, by virtue of being part of the dissertation, much more important in the long run than orals, but for some reason the orals seem so much scarier and serious! in my department, at least, it really is more of a formality and opportunity for feedback than a hurdle. thank goodness!

@mrs. 64: @LovelyPlum: Thank you, ladies! It feels SO SO good to be done. I don't know what to even do with myself now that I'm done!! Of course, now I REALLY need to crack down on the job search, since Funemployment can only last so long I must admit, I'm starting to freak out a bit over not having a job, so hopefully something will come soon.
So tell me, do you have any job searching tips/strategies?

Does your university offer any career services or a career fair?
I turned in my final paper on Thursday, so I am FINiSHED! I officially graduate on Saturday, but I won't be attending since it's in North Carolina

@mrs. 64: You are so sweet to check in! Congrats on that last exam, and I hope you enjoy these 5 weeks of freedom!
I am currently working on my LAST PAPER OF GRAD SCHOOL, due tomorrow by 5. My goal is to finish it by 5 today, grill with our neighbors, edit images and citations tomorrow AM and turn that sucker in. I had my last day of work on Thursday, so after paper turning in tomorrow I am officially on "maternity leave" and on baby watch! I am 37 weeks 2 days and feeling it (pelvic pain, sciatica, sleeplessness, the works), so I will REALLY be cherishing turning in the final paper. Two weeks from today is my graduation date and 3 weeks or so until baby Really starting to sink in!
Good luck to everyone finishing up end of semester work and congrats to the recent and soon-to-be grads!

@LovelyPlum: 4 classes left? That's great! I am going at a snail's pace since I am working full time so I just finished my 2nd class. I'm looking forward to being able to relax in the evenings before my summer classes start.
@nana87: enjoy your break before the student exams come in!
@blackbird: Congratulations!!
@Maybebaby: You're almost there... hooray!

@nana87: yeah, it was pretty nuts. That's good about your prospectus. It varies adviser to adviser here, but mine is more of the opinion that you should just get it done as quickly as possible after your orals. Let us know how it goes!!
@blackbird: @maybebaby: CONGRATULATIONS ladies!! That's such a great accomplishment.
@mrs. 64: enjoy the break! I'm plowing full-speed ahead, but I don't have any summer classes, which is nice. I'm planning to celebrate by...working. Exciting, no?

I fiiiiiinally finished my coursework, yay!!! Now I just have to grade. Somehow, that seems less stressful. Weird
@blackbird: they do. I've not used it here, but I got my first job out of undergrad from a university-wide alumni career listserv. Does yours?

reviving this older thread to brag for a minute...
I successfully defended my dissertation prospectus this morning!! I'm officially ABD and start my research abroad next week!

@Nana87: Aaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh!!!!!! I'm so excited for you!!!!! You go, lady
And I really hope that this isn't the last time this thread gets revived

@LovelyPlum: thanks!!!!
and yes, I love this thread, it's so nice to chat with other people in grad school about babies and ttc! no one in my cohort has kids or is really talking about it that openly so it's really good to see it isn't impossible to combine the two!

I just have to share -- I successfully defended my master's thesis today! The committee asked for minor revisions (as a formality) and said that it was one of the (if not THE) most well-written theses they had seen! I'm thisclose to being done! Yay!!!

@jackieomy: CONGRATS!!! That is so awesome What a relief, no?

Such a relief -- and, even better -- I got a job, and I'll have my master's in time for the bump in pay! Woo hoo!

@jackieomy: Woot woot! That's awesome!
Can I celebrate for a moment, too? I finished my last official class for my degree. Woohoo! I have a field study that runs through August, but the end line is in sight! I'm hoping to have my diploma in hand by the end of this summer.

Thought I'd check in and see when people are heading back! Are you ready?
I have to admit that I'm sooo glad to not go back! But at the same time I miss the excitement of it

@MediaNaranja: I start back up on Wednesday! I'm really nervous, I've got a 7 week old and I go back to work the Monday after that. Luckily my school is online, but we'll see how I survive this semester! 0_o

Ugh, classes start on Monday, but I have been trying for a week and a half to get back into work mode. I was really enjoying my time off!
eggplant / 11408 posts
Bumping this! Sorry I didn't see responses two weeks ago. That was when we started, and things were a little unsettled. Now, two weeks in, I think I am starting to get a handle on the semester. Not ready to be back to doing work yet, but I think that goes with the territory
How's everyone holding up?

@Honeybee: I never saw your celebration-congrats!! Degree in hand??
pomelo / 5178 posts
@LovelyPlum: I am done! Woohoo! I received an email saying my application to graduate has been accepted, so now I'm just waiting for them to mail me my diploma. It's such a relief to be officially done!
(Although I had this crazy nightmare last night that I failed my last class and had to retake it. It was totally stressing me out; I was so worried that I still wasn't done with my degree, and I had so much more to do. Apparently I still haven't quite gotten over the stress of grad school, lol!)
eggplant / 11408 posts
@Honeybee: congratulations!!! That's awesome! I am not sure that my grad school nightmares will ever go away, by the time I'm done! My adviser says that he still gets the creeps when he sees his adviser's handwriting on a Christmas card, and he graduated almost 20 years ago!

@Honeybee: You're amazing, congrats!!! Any big plans now that you're done?

I've missed the last few responses. How is everyone's semester going so far? We just started on Monday so I'm still getting in the swing of things.
@MediaNaranja: Thanks for checking in! I'm sure you are enjoying not having the stress!
@Bookish: How have you been handling school and LO? This is my biggest worry for sure. Of course the length of time we have been TTC has bought me another semester before baby, minimum, so I guess that's a positive in some regards!
@MrsScallop: Same! I'm a teacher so work and school start at the same time and it is tough!
@Honeybee: I had nightmares for months after I graduated undergrad that they came to my apartment and took my framed diploma off the wall! It was the worst!
persimmon / 1328 posts
@mrs. 64: The semester is going well now! Every year, those first couple weeks when the undergrads get back to campus are rough (and slightly annoying - they are everywhere!). My advisor told me this week that I seem to be handing Mommy and work well, so that made me feel pretty good Although, to be honest, I'm a bit shocked she said that, I definitely feel like I could balance work and home/family better.
nectarine / 2936 posts
@MrsScallop: What a nice compliment from your advisor! I don't think anyone ever feels like they have the work/home balance perfect, but it sounds like you're doing a great job.
pomelo / 5178 posts
@LovelyPlum: @Boogs: Thanks! I actually started a new job a few weeks ago, so I'm working part-time on nights and wekends at a nearby county library. This is a really great arrangement for us right now (since I can schedule my work around DH's work hours, and we don't have to pay for daycare). And I love my work! So I feel really good about how things are going.
Good luck to the rest of you still finishing your degrees. Keep up the good work!

Shamelessly bumping to share that I just finished my semester, and I am so freakin excited!!!
I cannot believe how hard this semester was. It wasn't that the work was difficult, but I swear, sometimes it felt like my brain was mush. I don't regret being pregnant during the school year, but I sure as heck am going to enjoy this time off over the next few weeks. Or rather, I am going to use it to get ahead before we start again at the end of January!
How are all your semesters shaping up? Done with work yet?
