We are attending a presale for first time parents tomorrow at a huge consignment event in our city. Any suggestions for what we should try and pick up? We haven't had our showers yet so I'm not sure what will be worth picking up now and taking off the registry. We already have a swing, rocker, and activity gym.

I am a huge fan of getting the kind of plastic/outdoor toys that you can thoroughly wash. And clothes. Getting things like a pack n play would kind of weird me out since you can't fully wash all the soft parts. But maybe things that they only use for a very short time like a jumper, etc? That at least you could take the seat off and wash and wipe down the plastic pieces. Toys are a good thing also - they can be so cheap at these sales.
I used to go to these sales when I was preg or when my son was tiny and get very little. And now I go and I leave with all kinds of stuff (he'll be 2 in january). The last one I got a toy "beep-beep" (car) and little bikes for him and for my niece. I definitely love them for the outdoor toddler stage stuff.

How often does the sale come and when you are you due?
Our sale comes twice a year (fall and spring). I shopped at the spring sale when I was pregnant and mostly bought gear because we were team green and didn't know what clothes..
Spring (while pregnant) -
- Swing
- Bouncy Seat
- Activity jumper
- Pack and Play
- infant bath tub
- Infant toys like rattles, play mat, etcFall Sale (when DD was about 2 months old)
- Clothes
- High Chair
- Ride on toys -
-A sitting/standing musical activity table.
-Toys - ones you can wash that play music and/or vibrate.
-Kick mat to put in the pack n play that plays music when they kick or hit it.
-A laugh and learn puppy. There were tons of these at our sale for cheap - under $5.
-Toy organizers - wood structure with buckets.
-Changing Table
-Snap n go stroller (especially if you plan on flight travel those first 9 months or so.)
-Jumparoo/exersaucer
-Locking foam mats for the floor
-Clothes. Lots of clothes. Spend some time looking at everything and you can usually find outfits to put together. There are SUCH great deals on baby clothes at these sales! Get clothes in everything from newborn to 12 months to start you off. Look for stains and holes before you buy. -

Like @thehistoryofus, my church has two sales a year and I went to the spring one while I was still pregnant. I had a list (I think its a good idea to write out all of the things you're looking for-I took my MIL and gave her a copy of the list too, because two sets of eyes are better than one) and managed to get: A jumparoo, two sets of pack and play sheets, high chair toys, stroller/car seat toys, a bumbo and lots of clothes. I did not buy a playmat or exersaucer because my SIL handed me down hers (otherwise, I would have bought them at the sale)
My plan was to try and buy things that I thought she might use in the first 4-5 months. I had told myself no newborn sizes, but ended up buying a few newborn things at the consignment sale (and I'm glad I did). I also bought all of her PJs and gowns (because everything up to about 3 months is normally in excellent condition) at the sale, too.
The fall sale is coming up this Friday and my plan is a little different this time around-I am looking for lots of books and walker/push a long type toys (that will keep her entertained when she's more mobile). Clothes are tough though, because the older they get, the worse the condition. Make sure you sit down and look at everything! Oh, and bring a laundry basket!

We're going to another one tonight! Some things that I bought pre-baby include:
-bottle drying rack
-books
-socks
-pro-team apparel (DH is a big baseball fan, and I found him a onesie with his favorite team)At the last sale we went to (there was also one 2 weeks ago near me), our LO was 4 months old and we got:
-lots of onesies (she's growing out of them faster than we thought, and we needed 12+ month sizes to get through winter)
-winter car seat cover
-toys (hard plastic ones I can wash)
-solid food feeding items (dishwasher safe)
-hoodies
-socksTonight, we're looking for footie pajamas, more socks and long-sleeved onesies.
I'd also recommend looking for no-scratch mittens to keep your LO from scratching his face.

Ooh I forgot about the Bumbo (great to buy cheap, not worth it to pay full price) and a play/activity table later on.

AND - do your research before you go, so you know you're getting a good deal! And look at all the options - one of the winter car seat covers was $12. I thought "ooh - that's less than half price!". Then I dug a little more and found the EXACT SAME ONE for $4. Since the consigners set their own prices, there can be a range of costs for the same item.

@Goldilocks1107: These are really good tips! I really studied the sales at BRU to know what the retail prices were on things. Sometimes people set prices kinda high. Usually I won't buy used unless its more than 50% off retail.
I agree with digging around. There are always TONS of bumbo seats. At the start of the sale you can dig and find some for $5-10. Towards the end of the sale only the higher priced ones are left ($20+). Somehow they all get sold every year!
Things will be moving really fast and really overwhelming. Don't "study" an item too long, grab it and sort through your stuff at the end of the night before you check out.

@Goldilocks1107: I would agree on the digging around... I got a little stool for my son at the last one I went to. There were 4 of the exact same stools, one was $3 and the others were $5-6 so I snagged the cheaper one!

I would say toys!! I never thought I'd need to buy DS toys, but now he's at a different developmental stage and I definitely won't pay $20 for cheap plastic crap, but $5 I can do lol.

There's one by my parents home twice a year. They've bought high chairs, baby gates, ride on toys, mega blocks, things like that.
This year, the list includes a folding slide, rocking animals, wagon, play house, sand/water table.

This one wasn't a JBF but very similar. I agree paying $20 for plastic crap that she will only play with for a bit stinks. But when it's $2-$5 I don't mind so much!

@highwire: If you are due around Thanskgiving, I would go ahead and look for obviously some winter clothes. You can pick up some great gently used coats!
I also was able to find some good soft fabric blocks that my baby loved when she was still under 6 months and just laying around a lot!

i love consignment sales! I've only been to one since we found out what we are having but am going to another one this month! I hope to load up on sleepers and onesies and look for a bumbo!

@scg00387: Waterproof mattress pad ($4), newborn socks and mittens (pack of like 6 for $2), 2 bassinet sheets ($4), 3 receiving blankets ($2.50), pair of sneaks ($4), teeny tiny stroller for baby to push around when she is mobile ($3.50), Tigger stuffed animal ($2), set of 5 or so books ($1)...I think that is everything!
