My friends husband left work 8 hours ago, and his cell died so she hasn't heard from him at all. Praying he makes it home safely and soon!

Oh my word!!! Thinking of you all and hoping everyone is safe!

Seattle gets made fun of all the time...the hills in downtown are crazy and we are surrounded by water and we just aren't equipped to deal with the extremely cold conditions and snow which makes everything freeze over...it's super scary.

OK, I'll admit there's a teeny tiny part of me that has been living in the North for a quarter of my life and wants to chuckle at this.

But I spent the first 3 quarters of my life living in the South (SoTX and LA) so I totally get how disastrous a situation like this can be. Here, we have salt trucks going down the streets of even our small town within an hour of it starting to snow. But that's something that's necessary in regions that get snow like what, twice a decade? Maybe? Hell, I didn't even own a proper winter coat until I moved up here.

An while I sigh good-naturedly now at the idea of the panic and chaos that ensures whenever an S word is even mentioned on Southern televisions, but the last time I was in the South and we had a (relatively light) ice storm, no one was prepared. No one knew how to drive on it, there were no salt trucks. It's clear as day to me how easily a situation like what's happening now can develop.

We're prepared for and used to it here, because it happens a lot. But hey, check out us try to deal with tropical weather!

I hadn't checked the weather forecasts in a few days, but I'm a bit surprised that schools and daycares and everything else were opened today? Was it predicted to be nothing?

ANYWAY, I hope all our Atlanta bees (and all our bees) are safe and warm at home now. The pictures look awful, and I can't imagine spending in those sort of traffic conditions. What a bloody mess.

@MsLipGloss: I cannot believe there are still children out there. You're right...if I was lucky enough to stay at work. (Although, in those conditions, I would have been forced to stay.) I cannot imagine what is happening to the emergency vehicles out there.

And here...everything is all melting. The world is upside-down.

    @Espion: topsy turvy indeed!

My DH never made it home. After 10 hours in the car, he managed to turn around on the highway and get back to his office.

@lovehoneybee: typically, things close at the suggestion of snow. But that has happened so much this season, I think this time schools and such took more of a wait and see approach rather than a proactive approach.

@grizz: Cell phone towers were so bust cause everyone was trying to use the phones. I hope your friend made it home.
@MsLipGloss: I am so sorry!! He must be so frustrated!! Glad that he made it back to work ok.

My friends husband finally got to day care at 930. Their son was sleeping and the director was there with 5 kids still, so he decided to just sleep their so not to be in the road and help the director. I don't know that they will be able to get home today. Ice, won't be above 32 all day. She just wants to see her LO but at least he is with his Dad.

@Smurfette: it took me 4 or 5 tries for several calls to get my DH on the phone. I kept getting random people on the line. and yeah, I am so relieved he's not stranded on the expressway. I think things won't change much until Thursday.

Thanks for all your thoughts and well wishes!

@MsLipGloss: that is rough. I bet the director was glad for the help, though. I'm glad he got somewhere safe for the night. A fb friend of mine lives in Atlanta and took food and snacks to people in their cars.

@dagret: that is so awesome! I am home because one of my sort of nearby neighbors drove me and my LO the last 1/8 mile up a big hill to my street/house. I was in the process of finding a parking spot along the road and preparing to carry LO home. It had been just over 4 hours in the car, and if I tried to go around and approach from another direction, it would have taken several more hours and then who knows what accidents might have blocked the road. These neighbors spent their *time off* helping anyone and everyone the could. It was so amazing. And humbling.

Oh my goodness I have been following this all night and reading the stories is so crazy. Praying everyone is OK and everyone who got stranded makes it home safely!

I am in the north so obviously a couple of inches of snow is nothing to me.. But this would be like us getting 6 feet of snow in one day, which would be a crazy disaster even with all the plows and salt trucks we have going from the second it starts snowing here. Even just 2 feet is enough to get everything closed, to avoid situations like this on the roads, and that's because it happens at least once every year! So the infrastructure is used to it.

@mrs. wagon: If it had just been snow it would have been chaos, but not a complete shut down. But the ice. The ice! The ice sealed the deal.

@chopsuey: I heard this morning there were still a couple of kids stranded in a school bus!

Ice scares me more than snow. I also get worked up when the day starts off normally and then snow or bad weather happens mid day. Just last week we had to leave the car at the office and take the train home, because we couldn't get on the highway.

I get super scared about school buses. I know they're safe and all, but last night on the news I saw a few clips of buses on their sides and I don't even know how those stories turned out.

Love to Atlanta! I know we laugh and poke fun at you guys when you get a bit of snow and chaos ensues, but ice is no joke – and it only takes a little to completely screw everything up, no matter where you are!

One of my cousins is a high school principal in Atlanta and she just posted to FB that she had 45 kids, plus some parents and a couple strangers who got stranded at her school OVERNIGHT. They dismissed at 1:45 yesterday and parents were not able to make it to the school at all…who knows when they will get there today. Madness.

I grew up in Seattle before Seattle started getting snow on a yearly basis, and one year we got a freak snowstorm come in and were stranded at school. They started plans for us to stay at school for the night, but my brother and I ended up getting out on a school bus around 8pm; which got stuck trying to go up a moderate hill and rolled back into several parked cars. We then had to wait for another bus/truck to come and get us. At the time my brother and I (and all the other kids) thought it was an awesome adventure, only now do I appreciate how terrified our parents must have been!!!!

@Smurfette: That makes me so anxious just reading it! I have not felt that helpless since my LO was being taken away for surgery. I was terrified that I wouldn't be able to protect/care for my LO. I kept my shit together because I didn't want to frighten BabyGloss. But she's certainly not the only one who shed some tears yesterday!

Motherhood has totally changed me...I was telling DH about all this last night and I started crying just thinking about my LO having to spend the night at daycare and me not being able to get to her.
