It's seriously so sad though. :T I'm looking out my window and there's no movement on 2 major freeways.
Can't imagine having to get to my babies and being stuck out there!

Wow! That's crazy! I had a little giggle over how little snow that is (compared to what we get in VA), but it would be awful to be stuck in that traffic, wrecked, or unable to get to your family.

@cmomma17: it's just insanity! i have lived in some extreme climates, but have never seen anything like this. it took me over 4 hours to travel a few miles (less than 5). my personal theory is that it is snow AND a zombie apocalypse. we just haven't heard about the zombies yet!

@cmomma17: I was incredulous too until DH told me his university in NC closed for snow when he could still see grass on the ground. I have to remember they don't deal with snow and ice regularly.

@MsLipGloss: good call on the zombies! Lol
@swedishfish: true. We call that a 'dusting' in VA and nothing would close! But we're used to the white stuff - although plenty of people here still can't drive in it!

@chopsuey: @MsLipGloss: my friends still can't get to their LO at day care.

@Smurfette: my DH isn't home yet. He's been driving for 5 hours.

A few years ago in the DC area there was a snowstorm that hit during afternoon rush hour (aka Snowmageddon) and some people had 16+ hour commutes. I called in sick that day and was so happy, since I have a 30 mile commute!
Hope everyone in Atlanta is ok, how stressful!

Hope your DH gets home soon!

It's really bad! Thankfully I texted dh at 12:30 and suggested he go ahead and leave for the day. It took him 4 hours to go less than 10 miles and he ended up getting stuck and walking the last bit home. We have a lot of friends that are completely stranded. So scary!

I hope all you Atlanta bees are home safe and sound. That is just crazy. I couldn't even imagine not being able to get to my baby.

Omg this is so awful! I have nightmares of realizing it's 8pm and I haven't picked up my kids yet and I can't get there quickly... Get lost, can't dial my cell phone for some reason... This is that nightmare come true

Wow, that is insane! I hope you Atlanta bees are doing ok. I'm from Ontario, and that amount of snow looks like late fall/early spring to me - it seems crazy that weather like that could shut down a whole city!
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
@PermaStudent: I'm in Houston and all the schools were closed and most offices today because of sleet...not even snow! But we don't have salt trucks/snow plows because snow is so rare here (I assume Atlanta is the same), so we just have to wait for the ice to melt to be able to drive.

That's terrible! I'm in PA and it took me 2 hrs to get to daycare (5 mi) a few weeks ago. I can't imagine not being able to pick up my baby at daycare.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@PermaStudent: we have no equipment to take care of the snow. And people freak out which causes more issues.
GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts
@Smurfette: Yep. *sigh* Very few people realize that driving too slowly is just as dangerous--if not more so--as driving too quickly. They aren't even driving fast enough to keep the ice from freezing on the well-traveled streets! And I have seen at least 6 people now cause HUGE traffic jams for failing to use enough speed to get up an incline/hill. Consider this a practical application for high school physics, yo!

@MsLipGloss: LOL! I was looking at pictures and it totally looks like The Walking Dead when everyone is leaving Atlanta.LOL
I was nervous coming out of my garage, hopefully it doesn't ice over by the time we go back to school Thursday. Just glad Baby Bear finally got to see snow!
And yes, no equipment. I bought a ice shovel thing in 2011 and that was the last time I used it. Maybe I'll get to use it tomorrow...3yrs later!lol
grapefruit / 4089 posts
@Smurfette: Oh, I totally understand! Even here, when we get our first big snow of the winter, it's like people forget how to drive. The lack of equipment would be a whole different ballgame!
@lawbee11: So crazy!
GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts
@Espion: that's if you didn't optimistically leave your office at 12:30 thinking it might--at the worst-- take you 2 hours to go less than 5 miles. 4 or more hours later . . . You're too far in to turn around but still not close enough to home. I wish I could just beam everyone home! I haven't seen traffic like this since 9-11 . . . Seriously.
GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts
@FarmWifeGina: Yeah, I get it. I learned to drive in Alaska ( and lived there for yeeeears). But this is the worst thing I have ever seen. It's a wee bit early to giggle at the South just yet. Thousands are stranded. And separated from their LOs/ families.
GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts
@FarmWifeGina: No worries. I'm game for all the giggles and memes in about 24-36 hours! Lay 'em on me!
ETA: in a vacuum, it seems absurd that this could be caused by an inch or two of snow. but seeing it--it's freaky like apocalyptic freaky. and it reminds me of how fragile everything really is. : /

My SIL's husband's brother, wife, and 3 day old infant have been in the Atlanta traffic trying to get home for going on ten hours. It's really scary.
I'm originally from Massachusetts, and this kind of weather would've been nothing. Living in North Carolina now though I've realized that when people don't know how to drive in it, and the town budgets don't include salt trucks or snow plows, it is absolutely more dangerous down here than with several inches up north. I've been getting annoyed at my northern friends mocking the situation, because it's just not fair to compare one idea of inclement weather to another. It would be like people in North Carolina laughing at northerners "overreacting" to a hurricane. If you aren't prepared, you aren't prepared.

@autumnlove: thanks! realistically, he will either sleep in his car on the expressway or make it home suuuuuuper early tomorrow. if he doesn't run out of gas.

@MsLipGloss: gosh so sorry this is happening to y'all. How scary. We live on the GA/AL border and my husband was complaining about getting home but ultimately it was not a big deal. I know we are lucky!
Re: snow in the south...snow is one thing, but ice is something we aren't prepared to handle. Plus it would have been prudent for the schools to shut down, but they didn't want to seem reactive I guess.

@MsLipGloss: No, you're right, it was rather tasteless. I plead losing the TV remote and barely being online and having no idea what's happening outside of my house. Just saw the meme and thought it was funny.
