I suspect LO has hand foot and mouth. We are going to the doctor later this morning to confirm. If you have gone through this virus what was your experience and what are your recommendations for riding it out?

My DS has had this at least twice, and I suspect that he is getting over yet another case. There really wasn't a whole lot we could do. The first time we had it confirmed at the pediatrician, and the subsequent times we didn't. He is really cranky, and we just gave him lots of TLC and tried not to take it personally that he was throwing extra tantrums since it was clear something was "off". I don't think the sores on his feet and hands were bothering him much, but he definitely had stuff going on inside his mouth. And if his appetite was down, we didn't push the food (not sure how old your LO is). Sorry you are going through this!

We've been through it several times, including a really bad strain that got both DH and myself. It gave us quite an appreciation for what C was dealing with. The one thing that seemed to help was a mixture of half children's benadryl and half maalox (edited to correct from mylanta) right before nap and bed. Also, give soft cool foods, nothing hard because those sores in the mouth can be very tender. We alternated tylenol and advil every few hours. It will get worse before it gets better unfortunately. And of course, disinfect everything you can.

LO is 22 months and so far the sores just seem to be on her body and not in her mouth. She ate a good breakfast but isn't real interested in drinking.
@t-mom did you keep socks on your son or leave everything exposed?

@pelikila: you and DH got the sores/blisters too? Eek! I thought we would be immune.

@MamaG: Most often you are but there was a particularly bad strain that went around in my area about a year ago that was getting adults too and also wasn't staying just on the hands feet and mouth but migrated to C's torso and bottom. Poor guy was miserable and so were we. Ours luckily did just stay on our hands, feet, and mouth but boy did they hurt.

My son had this when he was 9 months old, but we didn't know it until the sores showed up on his arms and legs. One day of a really high fever and then a rash appeared on his arms, hands, feet, and legs. We thought it was roseola at first (and so did the doctor) but then the "rash" got scabby and took almost a week to resolve. He was up a lot during the first few nights of the illness and refused food but did take some bottles. He ate pretty poorly for a week and was pretty miserable for a whole week. I don't have any advice b/c we didn't do anything special, just lots of TLC and aquaphor on the blisters.

@MamaG: last week he had socks on but when he was smaller and got it, he was barefoot.
@pelikila: I think I may have it right now too! No sores on hands and feet but sore throat for me and DH! So do you apply the maalox and Benadryl to the skin or so you drink it?

@T-Mom: drink it. Obviously get dosing from pedi for your LO. From what we've been told and experienced, there isn't really anything you can put on the sores to make them feel better or go away. It is one of those viruses you have to ride out.

We JUST had it a couple weeks ago. Started out as cold symptoms for a couple days (mild fever, fatigue, crankiness, disrupted sleep, etc). Spots showed up on day 3 or so.
Theres not much you can do. I gave her a couple doses of tylenol for the fever and just made sure to keep her clean and lotioned up (she had a heat rash to go along with it). It cleared up after just a few days. I think the contagious period is like 7-10 days.
Its not too serious. They let kids go to school here with it.

I see @winniebee said a week. Is that everyone's experience? We leave on vacation a week from tomorrow. It would be a bummer for any of us to feel miserable.

@MamaG: It was about a week for us too. I came down with a little something, but only felt sort of icky for maybe 2 days.

@MamaG: By the time the sores show up usually it's been in their system a few days. Overall 7-10 days from start to finish has been our experience.

We started with cold symptoms as well on Sunday. Tuesday night brought the fever that got as high as 101.9. We didn't treat the fever. She was able to sleep through it. Also in Tuesday night we found two red dots on her foot. They were red and flat. Today we have a few pimple like spots and red spots everywhere. Her feet, hands, torso, armpits, legs. So far as much as she will allow me to see I don't see anything in her mouth.
She doesn't really want to drink (which worries me) but ate Cheerios, banana and applesauce this morning. Her behavior seems fairly normal.

Update: We just returned from the doctor. Official diagnosis is hand foot mouth. Unfortunately LO presently has light pink spots everywhere. The doctor still felt like it was "mild" since very few spots are actually blistered or red. So far nothing in her mouth other than some redness in her throat which might be sinus drainage (I HOPE!). LO fell asleep on the way home and is napping. She's still her normal temperament and eating. She also drank a sizeable cup of water before falling asleep (YAH!).
I hope it's clear by the end of the weekend as her daycare requires no blisters with fluid in order to return.
