Where I live now, there isn't always great refrigeration so a lot of people buy live chickens and pigs. Then they butcher the animals when they're ready to cook and eat them. It keeps the meat fresh, and is part of the local culture.

We visited a working farm this past summer and there was a very similar vibe. Animals were livestock; you took care of them but didn't get too close emotionally, because they would be slaughtered at the end of the season.

I have to admit, it's a big adjustment to me to buy a live pig versus buying neat little plastic packages of bacon. It's totally hypocritical of me to eat meat, but not be able to look a live pig in the eye. There's a pig that I walk by every day and every time I do, I visualize a little Charlotte's web that says "SOME PIG". I'm rooting for the pig to survive, but meanwhile I had bacon for breakfast a few days ago. Total hypocrite over here... working on it. In the meantime, I'm going to eat mostly chicken and fish.

If you eat meat, how do you think about this stuff?
