We have hardwoods on our top two floors. I find them much easier to clean, especially since we have a dog. We have area rugs in the bedrooms, but they aren't as soft as carpet. We do have carpet in our finished basement though. If we didn't have that dedicated play space, it might be nice to have carpeted bedrooms.

We have a ranch style house, the main living area and bedrooms are all hardwood, with the exception of the kitchen and baths.

I have area rugs in each room. I know people (including my husband) think it makes no sense to have hardwoods and then put carpets on top, but I really like the look. It helps define the room and also separates the wood furniture from the wood floors so it visually pops more.

We have a mix a carpet and laminate upstairs. I hate it. It's not our top priority right now but we will eventually put in hardwood. We had to replace one carpet when we moved in but DH pushed to just put in another carpet until we were ready to do the whole floor. We got a wool carpet remnant so even though it is good quality it was really inexpensive.

In our house the stairs and the hallway upstairs are hardwood, and the bedrooms are carpet. I don't love hardwood stairs because I'm always worried DS is going to fall. But the hardwood is a lot easier to clean. Just 2 minutes running the swiffer vac and done.

We have all carpet upstairs and on the stairs. We plan to put in hardwood on the stairs and landing, but maybe just replace the bedroom carpet. It's a while down the line though.

I will say while I don't like the look of carpeted stairs, they are really nice with little ones learning to climb them. When we do them in wood we will definitely do a runner down the middle still. My friend just added more carpet in her house to help with noise.

So no experience with anything but all carpet but those are my thoughts.

@Foodnerd81: We are finishing our basement and DH wanted to replace the carpet on the stairs down to it with tile. I was like hell no, not with another baby on the way. The carpet is being installed today. One day when we refinish the hardwoods and take the tile out of the kitchen and replace with hardwoods, then we will put hardwoods on the stairs. But the girls will be older by the time we can afford to do all that.

I like carpet in the bedrooms, but we have hardwoods I am use to it now and it doesn't bother me at all. We are putting carpet in the basement office and guest room cause it is cooler down there, so it warm up those rooms.

We have no carpet in the house and the only area rug is in Ts room. I love hardwoods.

@aprild: We are building a house and requested hardwood throughout. The wood we picked is beautiful and with four dogs and a toddler, carpet just wouldnt have worked. We can always get cozy rugs for the bedrooms when we move in!

We had no carpet growing up in an old house, and I prefer it that way. Kids learn how to walk without slipping. No one ever accidentally fell down our stairs.

We live in a house with one level. Two bedrooms have wood, two have carpet. The two with carpet only have it because the wood floors were in such bad shape...it was easier to recarpet than repair parquet floors.

DH prefers carpet though. It just doesn't mean that much to me. In the rooms with wood floors we have a small rug by the bed in one, and an area rug under the bed in the other (the floor was in worse shape than we thought. We pulled up the carpet thinking it would be fine and didn't order carpet to replace it...but it was pretty bad)

we put hardwood in our bedrooms. it is beautiful, but if we get to renovate another house I would do carpet, and put the money elsewhere..

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: We had hardwood floors in the bedrooms growing up, and do it our house now as well. I really like them! They're easier to keep clean. We have a huge rug in DD's room that's super soft and cozy, but I like knowing that once it's not a nursery, if it's totally gross, it's easier and cheaper to replace than carpeting.
