So I admit this sounds like I've been living under a rock, but I've never read any of the HP books. Everyone keeps telling me I'll be obsessed. True?

It depends if you're into that kind of literature?
But I mean, I had never really read this type of genre before, let alone a whole series of books, but I was totally hooked! As amazing as the movies are, the books are definitely worth reading.

Is this a real question? JK The answer is YESSSSSS - each one gets better and better!!!

The first one isn't that long. I think it's worth a try, you don't have to commit to the whole series.

YES. Also, be aware that they start off "young" (as per the ages of the characters) and become more complex as the series goes on. I find the later books to be much more interesting than the first two.

I'm almost jealous of you, that you will get to read them for the first time!
YES - the series is amazing! SUPER easy to read, super easy to fall in love with.

@catlady: I agree - I read the first three all at once (right before book 4 came out), and it's probably a good thing I didn't stop right at 1 (though, it's still a great book). But you really start to become more involved the more books you read!

Yes!! But def agree with others that the first couple are a bit childish but it gets better!

@swurlygurl: I was going to say the same thing, I'm jealous that she'll get to experience them for the first time!

Absolutely 100% I think even if you're not into fantasy-type stuff you will love them.

Yup! I refuse to read it when I was in high school because I was dumb, but both DH and I read it about 6 years later. DH is reading it to the babies at night. He is already on the second book.

I think some people forget that these books are published as children chapter books so of course they are easier to read. I read the first one as a kid before it became popular and I was immediately hooked. I'm currently rereading the series for a second time as an adult and it is just as good the second time around.

Absolutely worth reading! I've read them all a few times. Love!

They are 100% worth it. And if you don't actually want to read a physical book, the audiobooks are amazing. Jim Dale comes up with voice nuances for each character, and it's engaging and incredible to listen to.

So I voted 32nd and it's a unanimous YES still. I still go back and re-read mine every couple of years. The first couple are written a little "younger" as some previous posters have stated, but I think the story is interesting enough to keep an adult engaged until you get to the later books. Also, it makes watching the movies even better because you get a lot of backstory that the films can't cover due to time constraints.

I'm not typically into fantasy stuff or reading (although I force myself as an adult because I think it is important), and I still think these are an absolutely masterpiece. You will love them regardless of what genres you typically read, or even if you don't typically read. Ha!

When they first came out, I was working as a counselor at a summer camp during my summers. It was an overnight camp, and my favorite part of the evening was reading a chapter from one of those books out loud to the girls in my cabin (only 1-3 had been released at that point). They were enthralled and it was SO much fun to read! I can't wait to read the first few books with my little girl. (The last four will have to wait until she can read them herself - they are a little darker.)

@pregnantbee: I 100% agree! Jim Dale did such an amazing job with the audio books.

OMG YES.
I didn't start until college (though the first one came out when I was in middle school) and I still enjoy re-reading them today!

Laughing that there is *one* person who voted no. Yes of course, have a wonderful first time in the wizarding world!

You guys are cracking me up with your enthusiasm! Apparently I'm going to have to read them

I was skeptical that JK could wrap up the series as well as she had written the books, but if anything the ending was even better than the series!

I have never read them or watched the movies I'm planning to read them with LO when she's a little older.

@Mrs. High Heels: I thought the same thing!
OP: I cried when I finished the series. I left a bar during a wedding weekend to go pick up my preordered book 7th book at midnight when it was released. My friend and I had to promise each other to stop reading so we could actually get ready for the wedding. I was 23 and had been reading them since they came out! So yeah, totally worth the hype! Can't wait to reread with my kids!

I love(!!!) this series! I agree with other posters the characters and storyline became more complex as the books continued on. I read almost all of them cover to cover the day/night they came out. I went to every midnight release for the books and movies. I completely geeked out at Universal on our honeymoon in the Harry Potter portion. I am planning on going back again and doing both parks.

100% Yes! I can't wait until my 4 year old is old enough for us to read them to her.

Harry Potter is my childhood!! I started reading them when I was 11 and the last one came out right before my 19th birthday! It was bittersweet! I cried! I definitely have an emotional connection to the books, but I love them!! Hope you enjoy them too! Pure magic!

YES YES YES
I never read the books but my SIL convinced me to give them a try, so I borrowed the series from my mom. I sped through the first book in two days and am hooooooked.
I wish I would have picked these up sooner!

Yes! I never read them until recently!!! I was a holdout but I wish I'd read them earlier!! They're so good!!

@winter_wonder: @lawbee11: I've never read the books or seen the movies either.
bananas / 9118 posts
I re-read them every other year or so. It's a time committment, but I love getting lost in the series. So much better than the movies, and I do love the movies.
cantaloupe / 6730 posts
Yes. I read them as an adult and it's just such a neat crazy reality that makes it a very fun read.
nectarine / 2973 posts
They are seriously amazing. I've read them all three times! And I still can't wait to start reading them to my daughter when she's older! I agree with some other comments about how they start kind of young and then mature as they go on. So definitely don't let the first couple of books turn you away because if that.
